Seems very much wishful thinking on the part of the government folk quoted. Most likely a misreading of Commission willingness to listen meaning accepting what the UK is saying. I fear we've been here before...
Worth recalling yet again that the Alternative Arrangements Commission work the UK government appears to be proposing has been rejected by the EU as a backstop replacement. Except for all Ireland SPS which is just part of the backstop dressed up differently.
Another pessimistic view... again as before what sign is there that either side will weaken red lines, which has to happen for a deal?
And this I missed yesterday...

Life on repeat... yes freedom of movement will be on the table in our trade talks (including with the EU) because it is one of the few things other countries want from us and we can offer.
But... any offer in trade talks carries risks - of precedent (if Australia then other countries will want it), of numbers (is there a limit to our cumulative offer), of public acceptability.

These things are difficult to resolve and hence why trade talks take time.
Thought occurs - a book entitled "The UK Trade Policy Handbook". No one person has all the expertise, but there's so much that could be covered. Now anyone like to volunteer to publish or indeed edit what would surely be an instant bestseller...? 🙄

That's Australia, New Zealand, US, maybe Canada, Japan, probably the EU, on the immediate negotiation list, plus WTO negotiations, with no trade strategy, no economy wide priorities, and no process for Parliamentary or stakeholder involvement. Can't see what could go wrong...
Free Trade Agreements are economically marginal, though probably positive. They involve making concessions, which somebody isn't going to like. And if you don't know what your economy will look like in a few years time, you may focus on the wrong things.
Also, start talks as soon as we leave the EU on October 31st. Australia like all other Governments will have an Embassy in London telling them that probably won't happen. Just that small credibility point.

@pmdfoster Thanks for asking, yes it is a bit frustrating that we keep having to think of new ways to explain why the EU / Irish position is as it is, and why the UK Government or ERG proposals do not provide the answer. 18 months now in my case... sorry for those who got it first time.
@pmdfoster And no, in answer to the other question / comment I see frequently, the EU and Ireland will not be changing their position because the most vocal supporters of a country's decision to leave say that would be for the best.

I have a WIP I need to finish, so logically I must start a new #sheith thread

I guess it *could* be a S8 fix it of sorts, but I'm ignoring both the epilogue and Allura dying, so.... more canon-divergent. Here there be angst, but there'll be a happy ending, I promise.
After Keith and the other paladins fall from the sky, Shiro doesn't leave the hospital for days. He checks in on all of them, of course, but he stays with Keith. He attends meetings remotely, answers questions, and writes his upcoming speech, all from Keith's bedside.
It's hard to see him like this, so pale and still, but it would be even harder to /not/ be there. As the other paladins wake up, one by one, Shiro is happy for them, but becomes quietly more and more worried about Keith, who hasn't stirred.
