Following a working session with @BillGates and @melindagates , President Kagame held an interactive discussion with staff of @gatesfoundation
President Kagame on economic growth: Growth of the economy should be about how that contributes to the wellbeing of people, what we can do to improve their living standard and for most of them to achieve their aspirations
President Kagame on community based health care and insurance: We made sure that even for the category of poor people at the bottom, we had to cultivate in their mind that if they contribute even the smallest amount they can afford, they own it and they feel it is theirs.
President Kagame on Rwanda’s mindset: We have to do more with less. We have been thrust into this position because of history and geography: the tragic history we have gone through and being a small country and landlocked. There is no way you can survive if you do not innovate.
President Kagame: Prioritizing is a problem for people in our situation, everything is a priority, putting priorities in order is difficult. We prioritized healthcare, we looked at ordinary people, that is where we started from.
President Kagame on prioritizing healthcare: How do you save children&mothers and make sure that they take the next day, week & year for granted. Especially when the history has been different and people have not been sure their babies will last until five. We have reversed that.
President Kagame: We have reduced maternal and child mortality rates significantly, we have also seen a huge increase in life expectancy.
President Kagame: In the last 25 years we have seen an increase by 20-21 years, which speaks to the fact that building from the ground is actually effective. It is all about our people and what we can do with them to make a difference.
President Kagame: In the next 25 years, Africa should be in a much better place than we are now. This will be based on how deeply we integrate, on trade, investment, sharing best practices and how we leverage the resources the continent has.
President Kagame: The continent has huge capacity. We have been let down by the quality of governance.
President Kagame: The good thing is every leader, every country, every African is talking about what needs to be done to make this improvement. Talking about it is good, it is a starting point. The next is to do something about it.
