1. For a certain type of Republican -- foreign policy hawks who are moderate on social issues -- Rudy Giuliani is a fallen hero. He was their hero in 9/11, their guy in 2008 and now he's completely entangled in Trumpian corruption.
2. But let's be real. Giuliani didn't fall from grace & get trapped by Trumpism. He was Trump's John the Baptist, a creator of Trumpism before Trump.
3. What Rudy Giuliani proved is that you could be a much-married New York loudmouth with no special piety & still get Republicans to support you if you stoke the culture wars & racial resentment. More on this here: thenation.com/article/trump-…

1. The Harold Bloom conversation seems to be people talking at cross-purposes with one group saying "let's celebrate the great man's work" & another saying "he was a creep & predator." But maybe the two sides can be linked? What's the relationship between the life & work?
2. I thought this Times obituary did a disservice to Bloom by foregrounding his banal late-period "Western canon is 💯" rather than the scholarly work that his lasting reputation rests on (the advocacy for the romantics & "Anxiety of Influence"
3. I'm not the biggest fan of Freud or Bloom but "Anxiety of Influence" did help return history to literary studies (in a period of arid formalism) by showing the richness of poets responding to each other. Also: Bloom wasn't cowed by Eliot/Pound's dismissal of the romantics

1. Lost amid the outrage over Scorsese's dissing of Marvel movies is the curious fact that Scorsese is, for better or worse, a formative influence on the current wave of dark, gritty superhero stories.
2. Rorschach's famous journal entries in Watchmen were pretty clearly inspired by Travis Bickle's voice over in Taxi Driver. Compare & contrast.
3. In fact one of the ill-advised prequels to Watchmen even underscored the point by haveing Rorschach meet Travis Bickle.

A properly functioning gov't engages in diplomatic relations w/ foreign gov'ts. Diplomacy is handled thru the US State Dept. using ambassadors who follow standard procedures. By turning to #Giuliani & his goons, #Trump privatized US diplomacy for his profit. That is #corruption.
Another way of putting it is that Trump made the benefits of US foreign policy accessible through pay-for-play. That is an abuse of power, which is a high crime and an impeachable offense.
Republicans rightly condemned Sec. of State Clinton for making US foreign-policy benefits available to nations like Saudi Arabia after they made generous donations to the Clinton Foundation. That was pay for play. Both Trump & Hillary are guilty of it & both deserve condemnation.

#FDR promoted the idea that the people of the world, in all nations, shared entitlement to four freedoms: that of the freedom of speech and expression, the freedom of worship, the freedom from want and the freedom from fear.
#FDR is arguably one of the most 'successful' #US Presidents. Some would argue that on the basis of his numerous social policies such as 'the New Deal'. Others, however, would argue that his role during the second world war was more prevalent to his success & everlasting legacy.
