The Muslim Brotherhood government in Libya & Erdogan agreed to split the E. Mediterranean between them, ignoring Crete that would ruin plans to steal Greek gas.

The Greek Foreign Ministry basically said “Take a closer look at the map. There's a Greek island there, called Crete."
Greek FM Dendias said the agreement is ”beyond all reason” and “shows a complete lack of geographic knowledge.”

The Greek FM also said the agreement ”obviously ignores something that everyone can see; that between these two countries (Libya and Turkey) lies Crete.”
1) Erdogan claimed to be using “international law” to support his irrendentist ambitions, but as usual, doesn’t specify any international law. So let’s talk about international law. The legal position of Greece and Cyprus is with the United Nations Law of the Sea December 10 1982
2)Article 121, Regime of Islands, expressly provides in Paragraph 2 that “the territorial sea, contiguous zone, the exclusive economic zone & the continental shelf of an island are determined in accordance with the provisions of the Convention applicable to other land territory”.
3) This negates the Turkish position that these zones of maritime jurisdiction should be determined by criteria such as size, population, geomorphology, etc. (Legislative History, Article 121, published by the UN Secretariat).
4) Similarly, Articles 122 and 123, “Enclosed or Semi-enclosed Seas”, negate the Turkish proposal that special rules should apply in such areas in terms of maritime delimitation and jurisdiction.
5) Turkey is one of only 15 countries to not sign or ratify the UN Charter Law of the Sea out of the 193 UN members. So who is going by international law? #Greece or Turkey?
6) According to UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, countries can set up an Economic Exclusion Zone (EEZ) up to 200 miles off their shore. All of the oil and gas deposits are within 200 miles of #Cyprus’s shore.
7) Turkey has a muddled claim that the EEZ both belongs to the illegal Turkish Republic of Northern #Cyprus (TRNC).
8) The UN Security Council, as late as January 30, 2018, in its Resolution 2398, renewing Unficyp’s mandate, made express reference to the consent given “by the Government of #Cyprus” and, ever since SC resolution 186 (1964), it is firmly established [...]
9) [...] that the international community recognises the Republic of #Cyprus and its government, despite the illegal Turkish invasion of 1974 and its consequences ever since. So Turkey using TRNC to claim Cypriot waters is not based on ANY legal grounds whatsoever.
10) #Greece has not yet implemented its inalienable right to extend its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles under Article 3 of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea because of Turkish threats of war.
11) The threat is in blatant violation of a fundamental rule of international law - Article 2.4 of the UN Charter - which stipulates that all member-states shall refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of other states.
12) So again I ask, what international law favors Turkey over #Cyprus and #Greece in the Mediterranean and Aegean? Erdogan always talks about international law but never shows us which international law?

The Cypriot Ministry of Foreign Affairs correctly asserted that:

“Turkey’s “distortion” of int law doesn’t afford it any legal rights and demonstrates that Ankara is alone in its views”

Libya’s Ambassador to Greece will be considered persona non-grata unless there is an acceptable explanation for the Libyan-Turkish memorandum to claim Greek maritime waters. There isn’t an acceptable explanation....
