I'm blown away by the idea blitz & connectivity at our first face-to-face @columbia @earthinstitute #climatecomm #sustcomm network meetup & workshop. Despite snow, ~100 students, staff, faculty, alums explored ways to accelerate & spread climate & CO2 progress. A few threads: 1/
@DrKateMarvel, Cynthia T. of @climatesociety, @climateofgavin, Jeremy H. of @earthinstitute & others focused on building a creative & effective arts/climate relationship. More soon! We explored humor & climate (yes) via a visit by @RollieWilliams, aka "Al Gore", host of @InconvenientTS! I mentioned one of my favorite examples of student #climateart with purpose - a Halifax art student's Facebook chat among endangered species (linked to a @WWF campaign) 3/
We had a great brainstorm on climate & clean-air spinoffs of the fantastic @BioBus #mobilelab bringing microscopy & biology to underserved schools, via @MollieThermos & @BioBusBen. Hey, @aqtoolbox, imagine an #airbus helping Nairobi & Bronx students/teachers track #pm25. 4/
.@dbiello, science curator for @TEDTalks, talked about face-to-face storytelling. Valuable reminders that success requires sustained work. A key point (no surprise): Academic incentives are still not aligned to inspire pre-tenure faculty to do outreach. blog.ted.com/catalyze-the-t… 5/
.@kylepope of @CJR described the big impact of the #CoveringClimatenow initiative he co-leads with @markhertsgaard (a big pulse of climate news) & @Claudiadreifus described her tutorials & courses helping scientists & scholars write for the public. blogs.ei.columbia.edu/2018/01/29/fre… 6/
@kylepope @CJR @markhertsgaard @Claudiadreifus .@kyu3lee & @SarahEFecht of the @earthinstitute comms team encouraged students & faculty to write for the State of the Planet blog blogs.ei.columbia.edu. blogs.ei.columbia.edu Sarah noted blogging tips: earth.columbia.edu/blogging/ Kyu and @BrightonKaoma ran a chat on podcasts. 7/
@kylepope @CJR @markhertsgaard @Claudiadreifus @kyu3lee @SarahEFecht @earthinstitute @BrightonKaoma This meetup was for campus connectivity, from @ArtColumbia to @LamontEarth. But we're also building #sustcomm capacity outward to communities from @GreenSchoolsNYC sustainability coordinators (via @TeachersCollege tc.columbia.edu/articles/2018/…) to journalists in tough spots. 8/
Key theme? Integrate students (a third of the first 200 network signups!) in 2-way communication brainstorming. Several attendees said divestment has to be in the mix. I've already met with @ColumbiaEcoReps. A next step is a student #sustcomm meetup. 9/10
Finally, none of this would be happening if @earthinstitute Director @AlexNHalliday hadn't offered me the chance to build an Initiative on Communication and Sustainability: threadreaderapp.com/thread/1177397… Thanks, Alex. Onward! 10/10
