Hundreds of thousands civilians dead. Thousands of US servicemembers killed. Tens of thousands wounded. Trillions spent. We're *still* in Afghanistan fighting the Taliban. Still!

In Iraq, the war gave rise to ISIS and Iranian hegemony.
And so more war always becomes the solution to the problems caused by the last war.

I feel like American press coverage has failed to adequately convey the scale of anti-Muslim persecution happening and intensifying around the world.

China has millions of Muslims in re-education camps, and millions more under constant, punishing surveillance.
Modi has Kashmir under lockdown, and is pushing anti-Muslim immigration legislation.

Aung San Suu Kyi is defending her government's ethnic cleansing of Muslims before the ICC.
Here in the US, the President was able to finally get his "Muslim ban" in extremely attenuated form, though the changes never cleansed its moral stain. And there are still millions of Muslims around the world who cannot come to the US because of it.

[Thread] There are so many angles to #Soleimani’s death that it will take time to grasp the full picture of it. But let’s try to look at a number of issues :
1/ The event : #Soleimani was one of the most important actors of today’s Middle East politics. His killing by the US is the most significant event in the region in recent years. Twitter tells you analysts are in shock : “we enter unchartered territories”.
2/ The spy : Head of the #IRGC, he was the face of Iranian regional expansion in the 2010’ and the architect of a network of militias in #Iraq, #Syria, #Lebanon, which has shaped these countries’ current situation.

2. The numbers:
- 27 attacks documented killed at least 203 civilians and wounded 749.
- At least *122 children* and 56 women among the casualties.
- *All 27 attacks* involved US or UK weapons.
- Specifically: 22 w/ US weapons, 2 w/ UK weapons, and 3 w/ US and UK parts.
3. A lot of ink has been spilled (incl. by me) about potential complicity of #US + #UK in unlawful #Saudi #UAE coalition attacks, risk of weapons being used unlawfully.

Why is this report so important? Clear evidence UK and US arms *already are* being used unlawfully.

The English-language edition of Headscarves and Hymens is banned in #Saudi Arabia, #UAE, #Kuwait and probably #Qatar too. So you can imagine what it has been like trying to sell the Arabic-language rights!

@AP #pt: Just like #HTS in #Syria, #AQAP in #Yemen is not a wholly contiguous organization of committed global jihadis - it's strengthened itself by embracing local drivers & structures.

=> That provides opportunities for counter-actors, but they require [some] engagement to do so.
@AP #pts: Another parallel to #Syria is seen in how the extent of localism embraced by #AQAP may in fact have weakened its long-term durability; by leaving large swathes of fighters vulnerable to cooptation by adversaries/rivals.
