the entire point is to neuter the Polish court system and create courts that can only agree with the government
and no, it's not like the American or British systems. In the US and UK you can't (yet) fire judges or fine them for coming to the wrong decision
remember, the Polish ruling party has already organized online trolling and doxxing campaigns of judges it doesn't like

Seems to me that if Bolton wants to see justice done, there is no need to wait for Senate testimony. He could walk into any TV studio in America and just tell us what happened.
In fact he could have done that at any moment since impeachment hearings began

I have a family member involved in chain restaurants who is made apoplectic by the idea that only old industrial jobs - steel, coal - offer good salaries, benefits... I've come to sympathize with him.
Why are coal miners inherently more worthy of political attention than chefs? Why do polluting, extractive industries have to be subsidized and pampered by the government?

The main problems with humanism & universalism—whether liberal or leftist—and ideas that relate to them is two fold:
1. They’re proposed as universal but applied selectively & inconsistently and
2. Even if applied consistently, when oppression is particular, they fail
The first one is obvious. We all know of, for example, how New Atheists vehemently attack Islam, Judaism, traditional & indigenous religions, & more as archaic, irrational etc, but are seemingly okay with Christianity, climate denial, etc.
This ‘Enlightenment’ prejudice is a very European thing. Liberal enlightenment antisemitism was the accompaniment to the religious & biological forms (look I don’t mind Jews as individuals, but as a group, they say)

it has emerged that former #Conservative Party minister Priti Patel suggested that the #UK should use the threat of food shortages in #Ireland
to persuade the #EU to drop the backstop demand.

The claims are described as outrageous in light of the suffering endured during the Great Famine - exacerbated by British trade policy - when up to a million people died.
Ms Patel comments are linked to a leaked report which said that there was the possibility that food exports to #Ireland could be disrupted in the event of a hard #Brexit.
