I’ve seen a bit about #ACL #injury and #menstrualcycles including news stories about organisations ready to study the menstrual cycle and #training - Let me give you some basic information to help you #factcheck before you start #cheering or #praising
Notice in the above tweet I didn’t link to the articles or state who they are because it is misdirecting you to the wrong story! #distraction So let me give you some #foodforthought about this whole #menstrualcycle and #ACL and #training
First, we don’t need a #womenprobs talk, we need an #accountability talk. #Training interventions have reduced #injury in athletes [fact]. Notice I say athletes, not just women, not just men, but long term athlete development helps people who play sport! #revolutionary #signmeup
But get this… we found this out through the design and delivery of studies (only short term ones at that). Structure, program and people to deliver is given in studies but if you’re not in a study, who should be giving you the program and coaching? #sport #sportingorganisations
But we don’t do it! #truth ! Most women don’t get a QUALIFIED #strengthandconditioning #coach to teach #movement #sprinting #agility #strength #power #conditioning So what happens? We have volunteers or people “do the best they can” and we see who comes out on the other side…
When do most women who are athletes get these coaches and support? After they are professional or elite! What? Why wait so long? I mean, we need someone to help us deal with our menstrual cycle probs so what are we waiting for? #sarcasm
Until we change the conversation away from #womenprobs & back to #athletedevelopment then we are kidding ourselves and pulling the wool over our eyes. This is like pointing at a plane so you can steal something. Distraction tactic 101
So I’m drawing our attention back to the item you’re stealing which is the #responsibility for #sports to provide all athletes the resources necessary to develop them in a way that maximises their success and reduces the risk of injury. #fact #simple #notbeingdone
Ok I will now, to satisfy a few others saying, but wait, what about the #pill ?? Can't that fix everything? #injury #ACL ! Just wait one hot minute! Are you a medical professional? No? Don’t suggest this! Why? Do you know any side effects? Do you know how many are already on it?
This thread doesn't have time to educate everyone on all things #oralcontraceptives but I wanted to give you #foodforthought that there are side effects including start of OCs in #adolescence having potential to influence depressive episodes later
There is a lot of conflicting evidence on OCs and menstrual cycle so we just don't know enough to take a giant leap into modifying #training & suggesting the #pill as a #fixall for reducing injury risk. This MUST be weighted up relative to the entire person's well-being!
We barely have enough information on ALL women and the #menstrualcycle. [Look up our lack of knowledge on #endometriosis] and we think we are going to be able to elucidate actionable items with #training?
The menstrual cycle, OCs and training should be researched (just in general for crying out loud) but don’t confuse #novelty with actual #impact on #injury in comparison to known & researched effect of long term athlete development. Do simple well it will solve a lot of woes!
