@e_amyna Here is a translation of the thread in English. Feel free to use it. Great job!!
@e_amyna 1/ On February 28, 2020 @nytimes publish an article titled "Turkey, Pressing E.U. for Help in Syria, Threatens to Open Borders to Refugees" by Matina Stevis-Gridneff and Patrick Kingsley, which cites 23-year old refugee, Somar al-Hussein, as its unique source.
@e_amyna @nytimes 2/ Somar al-Hussein is supposedly located in the eastern bank of Evros river, in the area of Ainos in East Thrace (near Alexandroupoli). He faces serious health issues; it is mentioned that he has lost an arm in the past and has severe vision problems.
@e_amyna @nytimes 3/ On March 10, 2020 @nytimes publish the fabricated article titled "We Are Like Animals’: Inside Greece’s Secret Site for Migrants" by Matina Stevis-Gridneff and Patrick Kingsley, where refugee Somar al-Hussein is again cited as the only source.
@e_amyna @nytimes 4/ According to the aforementioned article, Somar al-Hussein---who has one arm and severe vision problems that require hospitalization---finally entered Greece illegally. Furthermore, he managed WITHOUT his cell phone to recollect the geo coordinates of the so-called “secret”
@e_amyna @nytimes 5/ detention facility in the village of Poros (with geo coordinates 40°53'54.6"N 26°13'27.1"E), and provide them to the two reporters. Apart from the remarkable memory of the 23-year old, two important questions arise:
@e_amyna @nytimes 6/ Α. How convenient is it the SAME person that gave a same-day, phone interview to the two reporters for the article on February 28 to be the ONLY source behind the “disclosures” in the article on March 10?
@e_amyna @nytimes 7/ Β. How creditable could be the “testimony” of this (and only this) person, when cross-checking information is a basic principle of journalism? Would it be impossible to trace at least one more person among immigrants with a.. similar “experience”?
@e_amyna @nytimes 8/ When the above points are raised to the article author (Patrick Kingsley) by a Tweeter user (@Prodactiv), a one-hand man named Somar ElHüseyin (a.k.a Somar al-Hussein) appears and thanks the reporter.
@e_amyna @nytimes @Prodactiv 9/ In other words, the “Syrian refugee trainee software engineer Somar al-Hussein"---the only source for the @nytimes articles published on Feb 28 and March 10--- is actually Somar El Hüseyin, who resides in Istanbul, and studies Software Engineering in the University of Maltepe.
@e_amyna @nytimes @Prodactiv For completion, I’m adding the screenshots as provided by @e_amyna in the original thread (this is just a poor translation).
