My trusty energy engineer source is back with some interesting comments on today's disturbing news of a federal bailout of the oil & gas industry. He has some ideas on what Canada should be doing instead: 1/x

First, here is the news of Canada's federal bailout of the oil & gas sector in the midst of the #covid19 pandemic, instead of letting the industry sunset & retraining workers & incentivizing alternatives: 2/x theglobeandmail.com/politics/artic… #cdnpoli
Engineer: 'the Canadian oil & gas sector is on its knees. It cannot compete with big global producers, esp with its inferior oil product. Maybe time to use the bailout money to switch to hydrogen & keep people employed in a growing industry, not a dying one we can't compete in..'
"Large electrolysis plants making hydrogen, compression, building refilling stations & infrastructure for transportation would provide lasting jobs as the economy switches from carbon fuels. Avoid disasters we're experiencing right now. Already happening in Europe, why not here?"
"All the workers in the oil & gas industry already have the skills & knowledge to work in the hydrogen industry. They just need the opportunity! ALL of the skills are transferable: gas plants, refineries, high pressure fracking, compression, controls, etc use the same skills. 5/x
Engineer: "So retraining of oil & gas workers' construction and design skills isn't necessary, other than to introduce them to actually working with hydrogen. 6/x
Engineer: "A shame that the workers employed in this non-competitive oil & gas industry can't use their skills in something more challenging (hydrogen) that is saleable, exportable, useful at home, & would even attract investors. Use federal bailout money for that instead." 7/7
PS Former gas pipeline engineer adds: "No amount of bailout will revitalize Canada's oil & gas sector. It cannot compete internationally as we have just seen with oil & recently with natural gas/LNG. Bailout for what? To keep the PM's faulty logic from being exposed?" #cdnpoli
If you talk to many engineers & construction experts for work you hear this kind of thing daily: "I'm just disgusted with our politicians & their lack of knowledge about everything they get involved with." Don't politicians talk to science/engineering types sans vested interests?
Engineer adding some final points as well as some links: "A hydrogen industry would also support the rest of the country as the oil & gas industry used to, since the materials, manufacturing & equip't can all be made here, e.g fuel cells for transportation are made in BC."
"Ontario and Quebec used to manufacture heavy equipment, maybe that can be done again for hydrogen." If that requires subsidy, so what? So has oil and gas, for years! #cdnpoli #ableg #bcpoli #onpoli
2. Korea launches prototype hydrogen train in 2020
3. Germany has a draft national strategy on Hydrogen as fuel:
4. Denmark is reducing its greenhouse gases through the implementation of clean fuels such as #hydrogen. Where is Canada? #cdnpoli
5. The Dutch have completed a 10-day night test of the nation's first #hydrogen #fuelcell powered train
6. Green hydrogen gets real as utility business models and delivery solutions emerge
Engineer is adding a PS: "TransMountain/TMX pipeline cost is already up to $16B, maybe $20B or more before it's finished, and then who will we compete with...Saudi Arabia, Russia.? We just saw how futile that could be!"
"The US has at least 10 additional LNG plants that can be constructed while we're struggling to build just 1. We think we're going to compete with ...Qatar, US AND Russia, who are already supplying the markets & can easily out compete Canada?" #CoastalGasLink #LNGCanada #bcpoli
Engineer: "Canada has been kept behind by the fossil fuel industry for their own reasons while other nations are actively developing hydrogen infrastructure"
Good account to follow for hydrogen energy news. Please talk about hydrogen to every politician you come across!
