Just doing some digging. #Pain is extremely nuanced. And the approach should also. W my kids #health & #pain there has been continued lack of knowledge, assumptions, & unwillingness to understand.

Oggi vi parlo di una bellissima scoperta di una proteina fondamentale per lo sviluppo del tumore al pancreas da uno studio tutto italiano pubblicato su Gastroenterology. Segue un thread da non perdere assolutamente. Let's go!
1/n 🧵#oncology #12febbraio

ICYMI, a reminder that this pandemic will have a lasting legacy beyond the tragedy of the countless lost lives and grieving families. Results from the #COVERSCAN study on #longcovid reports that organ impairment was detected in post COVID patients as shown in the figure below
This included damage to the #heart, #lungs, #kidneys, #liver, #pancreas and #spleen In almost a third of patients, damage in 2 or more organs was identified. In particular, damage to the liver, heart or lungs was associated with further organ impairment.
The participants in this study were all considered to be previously at low risk of #mortality and had no #comorbidities. bmjopen.bmj.com/content/11/3/e…

Addressing #PatientSafety in Healthcare:

I received a call tonight from a mother whose adult daughter was brought via ambulance to the ER. She was in the middle of #pancreas flare. She is 19 & is living with bf. He is the one that made the call. She was in the bath at time 1/
and due to pain and nausea could not get out. Paramedics took her from tub. She had no clothes on (totally understand this was emergency). During transport to ER ketamine and fentanyl were administered. Once at ER she was NOT taken back to bay, instead she was 2/
placed in the lobby on chair. She was left alone in lobby. Her bf was there but no one was monitoring vitals or reactions of medication. The young woman was disoriented. Her boyfriend unsure what to do. While they are ‘adults’ they are young 18/19. The young women 3/

My kids have #hereditarypancreatitis. The pancreas can weak havoc on ones body; nausea, malabsorption, vitamin deficiency and #pain; horrible pain. The option we were given was 2 remove #pancreas, spleen, half the stomach & other ‘parts’ to 1/ Image
ensure that there 75% of developing #pancreascancer did not occur & that it would address their pain. It did not. They both came out with multiple complications. While this transplant CAN produce good outcomes there are a number, such as my kids left with #pain 2/
and multiple life issues. Many have been abandoned by the hospital that did the transplant & are having to navigate the system to figure out care. When you have no #pancreas, no spleen, only half a stomach constant #pain, malabsorption & an entire host of issues 3/ Image

For those that have #hereditarypaincreatitis there is few options & those options often have large risks. One option is the removal of the #pancreas as well as other organs. At times this benefits. Others it causes more harms & families find 1/ facebook.com/662631262/post…
themselves alone & abandoned because the surgery caused greater harm than benefit. We are cast out, on our own finding options for those complications, for the ongoing pain. While I am happy for those that benefit we MUST find a less drastic option to address this disease 2/
This organ is so often ignored many people outside med field often not familiar with it. While there are some experts there is still so much to learn about this organ. #Diabetes #HereditaryPancreatitis #PancreasCancer 3/ Image

#2 First of all what are human pancreatic tissue slices (HPS)? these are 120-130micron thick tissue slices from a human pancreas donated for research. HPS have been used previously to study beta-cell physiology but owing to difficulties they were difficult to culture.
#3 Why is it important to culture them? culturing HPS allows for a new method to study the human pancreas while maintaining human pancreatic cytoarchitecture. This makes the long term culture of HPS a useful model system to study T1D, T2D, metabolic stress + pancreas-physiology.
