Chances are any executive order drafted by Trump’s people will have Stephen Miller’s fingerprints all over it, like the travel ban. But even if it works, it is a key but woefully incomplete step. We need Congress then to do the following. 1/
First, we need an emergency program, with funding, to reunite children with their families. All the children, including those unlawfully separated when parents were trying, within the law, to apply for asylum at POEs. And those who were unaccompanied minors. 2/
This will require lots of money and personnel. We need a pledge from Alex Azar at HHS that he will make this an urgent priority. Next we need a crash program to provide enough people to process asylum seekers at POEs-w/commitment from Admin that they will FOLLOW THE LAW 3/
We need overshight hearings on the vile for-profit companies that have been warehousing children and infants, esp Southwest Key—no touching kids!—and the truly evil GEO corp, already under siege for forced labor/trafficking. After major $ to GOP campaigns 4/
We need non-profit and human rights groups to have total access to these facilities, with a pledge from HHS and DHS that violations of any sort- phsical abuse, mistreatment, cruelty, etc—will be punished and that recommendations from these groups will be implemented. 5/
These are fundamental tests for our society. We must right these evil wrongs. Republicans in Congress need to step up to take on the rot in their Administration. I wish I were optimistic. I am not.
