1/ Morning coffee, thinking thru ideas about information and it's translation from phenomena into thoughts

(via recent reading & twitter exchanges, threads this came from follow:
2/ Why collect information? Why follow curiosity? Why take notes? What the hell is a "knowledge worker" in this day and age? (if you don't think you are, good luck to you…). This was fun:

3/ I need to read about Claude Shannon. I really like how he did "body things". A bit like Feynman's drumming "hobby". These are different ways to "compute"…

4/ Everything is information. Products are crystallised imagination, ie. matter computations (of information) that have been disembodied. Hidalgo's book is burning me up:

5/ Beauty is misunderstood and underrated. It signals rich information. It's the spark for our attention and it drives thought, but pre-linguistic, pre-logic. We only "get" beauty when we're open to our intuition & curiosity.

Self-insight: if I rely on willpower to change things, it usually doesn't work.

Instead, being excited or being "fed up" or seeing the thing as a duty to others — all these work.

Further thoughts threaded. Hit me up if you have an opinion.

Being excited is obvious, but v underplayed. Almost taboo. Huge ROI (for me anyway).

Being fed up is an if/else tradeoff. "If I don't do this, then nothing happens…" An easy way to orientate toward the future. Marginally less ROI.

Duty shifts the future orientation object of being "fed up" from myself to someone/group else. The object has to matter to you.

Seemingly the least ROI. But after reading "The Gift" + "Elephant in the Brain" this is the social contract among us social animals. Highest ROI.

"Genius" needs a reboot. And to do so, taste matters.

In classical Rome, "genius loci" was the protective spirit of a place.

These days this term is mostly used by garden designers to refer to designing for the landscape context. That is, to bring out the best in a place.

1⃣
The Romans called a person’s natural disposition for certain ways one’s “genius”.

In this way, "genius" from the latin root seems to be about protecting potential.

A certain surrender, or understanding of constraint, and then cultivation.

2⃣
Our current idea of genius is far removed from this. We're hung up on concepts like “creative genius” b/c as social animals we hunger for status.

The Romans called a person’s natural disposition for certain ways one’s “genius”. The Greeks called it ones “daemon”. One had to labour in gratitude for their disposition so to become “genial”, or fully potent. 1/
A gift—one’s genius—isn’t fully realised until it is given away. But we cannot fully, potently receive the gift until we can meet it as an equal. That is, to labour in its service. 2/
Labour is done without obligation. It happens at its own pace, and we barely remember producing the results. Whereas work is obligated and only happens by will. 3/

Interesstingly, Twitter's automatic #translation fails at translating this simple #poem. (In particular, Twitter does not translate 'Geredes') So I translate it for you:

crib
in the threshed straw
of the empty talk
there is no grain of truth anymore
hunger is growing daily

as nutritious as a grain of wheat.

Remark 1. The "das" in the poem was CORRECTLY cited by the tweeter (cf. docdro.id/x2xiYMH), but it is a grammatical error and should be replaced with the (by the way: homophonous) #subjunction 'dass' )

Remark. 2. The metaphor 'birth of a word' is a fitting one in view of #Christian #theology, in particular in view of the fact that #Jesus Christ is often associated with the Greek concept of 𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘰𝘴 (λόγος).

#Khashoggi Case Thread: I am going to ‘pin’ this post to use it as an ‘Info Thread’ on the #Khashoggi Case. I am in #Turkey. I’ve been following the case closely and with access to sources & experts here. This is a very ‘sensitive’ criminal case due to ‘Diplomatic Booby Traps’!!!
The Evidence Obtained Outside Cameras will not show any evidence of ‘tempering’ but other than license plates of dozens of diplomatic cars (Many with tinted windows-large trunks) with related time stamp, drivers Info, model/year: Nothing.
#Turkish Intel-Investigative Bodies also have the list of all Diplomatic & Private Saudi & “other significant’ Planes in #Turkey for the period of ‘interest.’ Many of the Target airports have their own security cameras & related evidence.

And like any examination of the unconscious you will see things on Twitter that fascinate you and things that disgust you. This is part of its attraction: the filters of discourse become permeable, allowing the unsayable to leak across.

I suppose we can safely say that now #TheFrighteners have been so successfully and publicly put on a certain sector their combined angst will spew a diarrhoea of spin & warp whilst trying to use THAT VERY THING to generate $£Es Some with automated AdTech software already bought.
2/ Some bought by gormless companies, by mistake, some in full knowledge or partial knowledge of what it could do. It will be interesting as time goes on to see who apparently DIDN'T CARE about the likely instigation of its more negative 'dark' capabilities looking to 'side-step'
3/ or even 'wrong-foot' Irish & EU regulation standards, & possibly law. This too is a kind of #climatechange & #ClimateAction in itself, a would be mammoth untouchable iceberg of 'dominion' & 'control' being melted out into an ocean of citizens' scrutiny & advancement for change

I walked through the streets of Kano one afternoon submitting application letters from organisation to organisation, I became thirsty so I stopped a "pure water" vendor to get hydrated

The car's glass rolled down, this young woman dressed like an 'Alhaja' looked through the window & asked me for directions;

"Hello, please are you familiar with this area?" She asked, I told her I was & she said she was going to a company named "Trol Global"

"Yes I know it!"
I remembered the company because it was one of the places I had planned to submit my CV, I told her I was headed towards that direction & she offered to give me a ride.

I hurriedly paid for the water & joined her in the car, we left & headed to the company.

I'm seeing accounts call themselves "bot hunters" & run prominent resistance accounts thru sites like botcheck.me. If the site says the account is a #Bot, they tweet that info.

It's a tactic to discredit #Resistance accounts & sow #chaos & #Division. THREAD 1/5
These fake "bot hunters" count on people believing them & blocking the accounts they call bots. This reduces the resistance account's reach & effectiveness.

Educate yourself on identifying bots so you don't fall for it. 2/5 #panic #disinformation #chaos
