This thread is more about the theory behind it all than the spreadsheet itself. I started managing my money this way 2 years ago and it changed my life. I feel so much more in control and calmer all of the time since I started doing this.
Of course I’m not stupid and I know it’s easy to feel calm about money if you have it, which I do (and I suspect most people reading this do) and I am very privileged. I know this isn’t a one size catch all approach and some people just don’t have enough money to put any aside.

Since money used to primarily take the form of coins stamped by the government, people just assumed that gov controlled the total amount of money. Seems logical, right? And that assumption has continued.

First, let's see where most money comes from. While the coins and notes in your pocket did come from the gov (you can tell because they're signed by the Treasury Secretary), most money is actually "bank money," that has no physical form, but only exists on your bank's ledger (2/)
How does bank money get created? There are several ways, but the main one is when banks make loans. For instance, if you draw on a line of credit at your bank, the bank will add dollars to your account, created from thin air. This also happens when you use a credit card. (3/)

A credit card offers its user A LINE OF CREDIT that can be used to make purchases, cash advances etc. What a credit card IS, is continual access to a small loan that the lender (your chosen bank) expects you to pay back within 25-55 days.
What a credit card ISNT, is an increase in your spending power. If your income is $100k a month and you have CC limit of $100k, you DO NOT have $200k to spend. You still have only $100k of your own money to spend, you just now additionally have access to BORROWING $100k.
Whether what YOU BORROWED is due 25 or 55 days later is dependent on when the expense was incurred because that determines what billing period it is captured in. I personally am a fan of billing periods that end on the 5th of each month because it keeps it cleaner.
