It should not escape notice that while Chinese Interpol officials are being clapped in jail, journalists are being killed in the EU and Saudi journalists are allegedly being cut to pieces in the consulate it remains perfectly safe to insult Donald or Brett in the US.
Borders are good for something, especially when they are guarded by the "patriarchs" who whatever their faults, are at least good for keeping hostile patriarchs at bay.
When you go to a restaurant you are shielded from the information of the kitchen and are presented with a clear interface with clearly defined operations. "Please give me the #3 burger meal". What makes restaurants work even for visiting foreigners is borders.
Borders conceal internal complexity and make it possible to build a global system by making operations predictable yet leaving internal freedom to change because the disturbances do not ripple out. Thus counterintuitively borders are necessary to make a global world.
One of the reasons the current model of the global world is in trouble is it doesn't shield societies from the peculiarities of other places. A smaller scale effect is observable in the destruction of individual privacy in the West. No walls at all is not good.
Without borders you get a network storm. Dependent systems break as things suddenly become incompatible. Nothing can be relied on any more. You get a global world alright, but it is Bedlam.
Nooooooooo!!!!
