Some big stuff can go through reconciliation, sure, but a LOT of his agenda can't. As of now the pivotal 60th vote in the Senate appears to be this guy: voteview.com/person/20101/j….
Could the 2020 Senate elections shake things up? Sure! But enough for the 60th most liberal Senator of the 117th Congress to sign on for all--or any--of this?

It will be crucial for activists and advocates putting this on the table to reeducate people--including lawmakers themselves--about the very robust, heroic, and perfectly mainstream Democratic tradition of opposition to the filibuster. politico.com/story/2019/01/…
Civil rights groups, organized labor, advocacy orgs like ADA, pols like Paul Douglas, Hubert Humphrey, & Walter Mondale, good government groups--across much of the 20th century, they championed majority rule in the Senate as a tenet of both democratic fairness & liberal progress.
They were right! And their efforts belie the notion that opposition to an institution intended by none of the architects of this country's political system and found nowhere else in the democratic world is some radical or outrageous position. /end

My sense of OWS was as a movement w/ real cultural & discursive influence but whose antipolitics created a strategic & organizational cul-de-sac. The contrast w/ DSA, Dreamers, Sanders 2016, and everything since--all directly engaging electoral & partisan politics--seems crucial.
But maybe that sense is wrong or incomplete, and there are in fact pivotal ties both institutional and intellectual linking Occupy to today's efforts. I'd like to know!

.@daschloz and my op-ed (nytimes.com/2019/01/15/opi…) appeared in the NYT along w/ this incisive @DouthatNYT piece (nytimes.com/2019/01/16/opi…). Both concern drawing cordons sanitaires. Douthat (avoiding false equivalences) tackles both left & right, while we only discuss the latter.
That prompts me to offer a claim about a deep asymmetry in democratic politics: Though the dangers of extremism and the value of parties as temporizers are common to all political persuasions, they are not shared equally among them.
Since con parties tend to both represent dominant social groups AND ally w/ econ elites who may have reason to fear majoritarian politics, their susceptibility to extremist influence shld usually pose more potent, system-destabilizing threats (ethnonationalism, authoritarianism).

Ok let's talk about why the filibuster must die. McConnell's diatribe against HR 1 shows the GOP will block everything if they can. Democracy, GND, M4A, gun regs - the next Dem president's agenda will be killed with 41 votes.

So how do Dems get to 60 votes? Let's dream a little:
2020: Rosiest possible scenario is a 5 seat net gain for Senate Dems. This would require holding AL (!), and picking up 5 of these: ME, CO, AZ, IA, NC, and GA. Not super likely, but we're just dreaming here. That puts Dems up to 52 Senate votes in 2021. GOP blocks everything...
2022: The new Dem President defies odds and gains Senate seats in the midterms! The "easiest" (ha!) pickups are OH, WI, PA, IA, NC, GA, & FL (Rubio!). Let's say Dems get 4 of em and lose 0 of their own. That's 56 Senate votes in 2023. GOP blocks everything...

2⃣ Aside from Revenue(tax) bills, bills can originate either in the House, the Senate or both simultaneously. When the bill has been polished it goes to a vote. There are two primary types of vote & one that is considered a countermeasure. #Senate ⬇️
