So! It’s #MyTwitterAnniversary, and it couldn’t have come at a more appropriate time. Hard to believe that I signed up for Twitter a decade ago — but it is so.
I signed up early in the morning on Feb. 5, in order to promote (even though I had no followers?) my liveblogging of the California Supreme Court’s arguments over the state constitutionality of Proposition 8 later that day:
My life was in a wildly different place — despite in some very obvious ways being similar! I was in the midst of a job change, just like today, having left my job in state government but not yet having moved to DC.
But, the differences from today were plenty. I had no clue what I was going to be doing or when I was even moving to DC. I was financially a mess, and I was drinking away the little money that I did have.
I had started blogging again at Law Dork, and I was told that I should join Twitter. So, I did! And it really opened a new world to me. I was able to connect with queer folks all over the country, get to know journalists, and virtually ~move~ to DC before I actually did so.
Twitter and my Columbus and DC friends were the best things about that year. Y’all supported me when I really was a mess. Everyone on here was so happy for me when I finally moved to DC — even though I still didn’t have a job!
Quickly, though, I connected with @seanbugg and @RandyShulman and started writing for @metroweekly. Eventually, that became my full-time job, which led me through the end of DADT and the beginning of the end of DOMA and Prop 8. That, in turn, led me to @BuzzFeedBen and @BuzzFeed.
In the midst of all of that, I got sober. (Again, with some key help from some folks on here.) My life got a lot better. I started seeing some big changes, and eventually I began to cover the Supreme Court regularly and was able to interview the president of the United States.
Now, I’m at another turning point. This time, though, it’s exciting, it’s more intentional, and I can’t wait to get going — but I’m also going to take some time off (and away from here) before then!
More about that on Friday, but for now, I’m just really grateful for all that good that I’ve been able to get out of this place. I know an entire American Horror Story: Twitter could detail the mistakes and fuckups to come out of this place — but a lot of good has come, too.
As it was with my first tweet, a decade ago, it is tonight.
Night, all, and let us try to be good to one another — and ourselves. 😴
