Trying to guess if Canada, a nation without nukes, would be targeted, and if so, would it be Toronto or Ottawa? Would I be able to see the flashes of the bombs hitting? Hear them? Or would I be snuffed out instantly?
And worst of all, knowing that even if the bombs fell elsewhere, that I was separated from my family. My son, at daycare, my wife at work, and my mother and brother hours away. How do I check in with all of them before the communications networks inevitably fail? No time to plan.
Even if I could get my family together, where would we go? We have no plans in place. Where would we be safe from the clouds of fallout? What would we eat? If everything fell apart, I have no idea what we'd do to survive.
I woke up before the bombs hit, in a cold sweat. I haven't had a nightmare that kept me from falling back asleep in a long time, but this did it. For those few minutes I believed the world was ending, and realized I was utterly helpless to save myself or my family.
I still like the postapoc genre, but I think this highlighted for me the foundation of horror and tragedy that underpin it by necessity.
ugh, somehow this got unthreaded. my internet cut out while posting this tweet thread, I guess.
