Seems to be some criticism of Macron’s stance in both EU27 & UK. Without taking sides:

1) EU27 position was that long extension required a clear purpose. May didn’t present a credible plan. Macron simply stuck to the position vs avoiding no deal at all costs.
2) Wanting to avoid no deal at all costs is fine, but others shouldn't pretend otherwise. Macron not alone. Barnier for example also for short ext. EU official told me yesterday: strategy has been disciplined & tight for 2 yrs, long extension without purpose means that's gone
3) It is not the EU/27’s job to stop Brexit, as the French president said last night.

To be clear, not expressing a view either way. Wanting to avoid no deal and buying time is an equally justifiable position.
