Next up at #HewlettVerify, @donie moderates a panel with @persily @noUpside & @CraigSilverman on "Getting Real about Fake News." Live tweet thread to follow.
@donie @persily @noUpside @CraigSilverman @donie asks the panelists what we're doing wrong.

@persily says the fake stuff isn't the problem, because you can find any point of view on the internet, the question is really how big the exposure is.
@donie @persily @noUpside @CraigSilverman @persily sez Research shows truly false content is concentrated in pockets (old people, conservatives). The false narratives are seeded by true information or hyper-partisan contents.
@donie @persily @noUpside @CraigSilverman @noUpside gives example of anti-vaxxer Russian troll content, but there were only ~9K tweets in a huge dataset. But people have a hard time contextualizing when they're in the middle of the mob, understanding the content is sometimes opportunistic to the news cycle.
@persily notes audiences are more skeptical of fake news, but also real news.
@persily @CraigSilverman says it's important to contextualize reporting on leaks, so that your audience knows about the motives, history of leaks.

Need to say what the attribution, verification is for the info, and especially what's unknown.
@persily @CraigSilverman Conversation about domestic dis/misinformation is more complicated in questions of authenticity, easier to report on foreign actors.
@noUpside talks about dis/misinformation in AL Sen Race.
