Pompeo has the mission tho find out what Russia is going to do if America starts a war with Iran . Possibly with Venezuela too.
1. Iran
- main ally/partner for China 's OBOR
-Russia's most important ally ( together with Syria) in the ME

-there is only the Caspian Sea between Russia/Iran, a sea not accessible to US navy ( bummer!)
-Iran is part of the resistance axis, incidentally having huuuuge oil/gas reserves
-has a young population, intelligent, educated and patriotic ( 80 million )

-the young generation in Iran thinks the current leadership is too soft
-has developed own missile system
-is a big country, mostly mountainous, impossible for troops to occupy it
-can and will close down Hormuz Strait and US/global economy collapses

Iran can defend itself, but now has powerful allies/friends, Russia+ China , who will not permit US to destroy another country.
2. Venezuela
-logistics are more difficult for Russia here
-but Venezuela has an upgraded ( by Russia) air defense

-natural barrier, 500 km jungle
-the army is with Maduro
-I doubt Colombia/Brazil will accept the role of cannon fodder
-the entire population will fight the invader
Russia doesn't even need to do too much here. It already did.

US mercenaries don't fight without air cover: see S-300.

Mr. Lavrov and Mr. Putin are going to wipe the floor, in a diplomatic way, with Pompeo.
He might not even realize it, he is that obtuse.
They might serve him traditional Russian pancakes+call it quits
