A2: Legalization is a civil & human rights issue. I don’t care if you don’t care for the smell of weed. Or buy into false narrative it is a gateway drug. Or oppose drug use on moral grounds. Prohibition is objectively, observably racist & destructive. #MarijuanaJustice
NYPD always claims that it is complaints (911 & 311 calls) that drive racially disproportionate marijuana arrests. Nope. As we legalization advocates been screaming about for years, it’s actually just racism. #MarijuanaJustice

Meanwhile, this article came out today. Upstate officials still “uncertain why theres widening race gap” in enforcement. Arrests of white people fell to record low in 2017/18, but surged for people color. Why uncertainty? It's Racism. #MarijuanaJustice m.timesunion.com/news/article/m…
The impact of marijuana prohibition extends far beyond arrest. Routinely leads to eviction, forced separation from children, loss of jobs, deportation, & reincarceration. These impacts felt near-entirely by people of color living in in low-income communities. #MarijuanaJustice
ACS took my client’s 6 mo old for a year after an officer saw her standing next to her aunt smoking marijuana. Tested negative. Still forced to go to drug treatment & parenting skills. Missed her daughter’s first words, her first steps. #MarijuanaJustice nytimes.com/2017/07/21/nyr…
Outraged by family separations on border? Read this NY mom's story about separation from her newborns, forced into substance treatment, & surveilled by ACS, all for smoking marijuana w/ doctors orders to help w/ extreme morning sickness. #MarijuanaJustice nydailynews.com/opinion/ny-kid…
An arrest for marijuana can lead to ICE arrest, indefinite detention, & deportation proceedings for immigrants who are documented or undocumented. Marijuana can get you labeled “undesirable” & evicted from public housing. It can keep you from finding work. #MarijuanaJustice
Marijuana prohibition also has longterm traumatic impact. A 19 year old I represent is so badly traumatized by all the times he has been wrongfully stopped based on the claimed odor of marijuana that he fears walking a block to get a sandwich at his corner deli. #MarijuanaJustice
If you’re moved & want to do something, support the marijuana legalization bill in NY. Visit here (👇) for more on how to get involved. This could happen this month: smart-ny.com
