China’s Guangdong Maritime Bureau issued an alert on Monday morning for a military drill in waters near Dongshandao, a coastal area in Fujian province. Ships are prohibited from entering, where China’s military is conducting exercises until Aug. 2 at 6 p.m., the statement said.
National Defense Spokesperson Shih Shun-wen said on Monday the military has taken measures to constantly surveil the situation on the water & air. The military is confident of its capacity to defend the homeland, safeguard the country’s freedom, democracy &sovereignty.

A senior US military commander has slammed Beijing for flexing its muscles over the South China Sea, and for not responding to Washington’s call to set up a crisis communication mechanism.
Davidson said Washington and Beijing were having an “ongoing dialogue” at the military level, but a crisis communication mechanism was needed to reduce the threat of miscalculation. Competitive does not mean don’t engage.

They said the move to tone down the language around the crackdown reflected the anxiety and shame felt by many rank-and-file officers over a fateful decision that has tainted the military’s reputation and legacy.

Over the past 20 years, China has made tremendous progress in improving its military capabilities, but its modernization program will remain a work in progress in the decade to come.
China trails the US in terms of nuclear attack submarines, aerial refueling & amphibious capacity. Beijing will continue to develop its capabilities on these fronts, but based on current projections, it will not reach parity with the US by 2030.
