US Citizen Virgil Griffith who lives in Singapore, was arrested yesterday and charged for helping #NorthKorea evade US sanctions by traveling there & teaching North Korea how to use blockchain tech & #Crypto to evade US sanctions.
Griffith went to Nirth Korea to attend and give a presentation to the “Pyongyang Blockchain and Cryptocurrency Conference” (the “DPRK Cryptocurrency Conference”).

He was aware he was violating the law, was denied permission to travel there by State Dept, but went anyway.
He also encouraged other US citizens to attend the conference in North Korea. I wonder if they’ll also be arrested.

And he planned on renouncing his US citizenship and was looking into BUYING citizenship in other countries.
Link to the DOJ complaint:

DOJ mentions others known and unknown, so I’m sure they’ll be investigating further.

He was “at least one of whom” who was involved.
He went to North Korea via #China
The traitor Griffith went to the California Institute of Technology, where he received a doctorate in computational and neural systems & also went to University if Alabama, where he rec’d a bachelors of science degree in computer & cognitive science.
He also works for a crypto company. Ahhh, he’s a research scientist for #Ethereum (and now also a TRAITOR to the US).
He was also previously a data scientist for the Tor Project from 2009 to 2016.

And he patented one way to spy on us when we browse the web.....go figure.
He also worked on a project to find mother’s maiden names from public records for 10% of Texas.

I tried to follow the link to that project, but the link wouldn’t open.
He went to the crypto conference in North Korea in April 2019, again, knowing it was illegal.

He also worked with “CC-1” who helped him arrange travel to North Korea.
The DPRK diplomatic mission in Manhattan helped him get a visa, he paid 100 euros for it, and then took a separate paper for his visa instead of attaching to his passport to try to hide his proof of travel.
He went to North Korea on or about April 18, 2019 from China and attended the NK crypto conference on or about April 26 and 27th.
The conference organizer told Griffith to bring up the perks of using crypto for money laundering and sanction evasion.
More details on how North Korea could use crypto to launder money, evade sanctions, and not rely on the global banking system.
Griffith also created plans for facilitating the exchange of a particular (unnamed) #Crypto between North Korea and South Korea, and once again admitted he knew it was illegal.
Here's the Wikipedia page for Virgil Griffith. He also created WikiScanner, which is what tracks Wikipedia edits from unregistered accounts back to their IP addresses.

JFC, he even rubbed it in DOJ's and State Dept's faces by posting a pic on Twitter of his rigged visa.

Look who else he was collaborating with

Boasting about soda he brought back from North Korea

Pointing out when he thinks North Korea has a good opportunity to establish their own crypto exchange.

He posted an offer to help #Huawei skirt US sanctions by offering to set up an Ethereum app store.

Note the date above in May. Around the same time, some media were reporting that US sanctions were starting to hurt Huawei.

Ummmmmm
Oops, here's the archive for his tweet above:

The other pic is a screenshot of the account he mentioned, who funds Ethereum development "in the name of Moloch the God of Coordination Failure." 🤨
Oh gee, suddenly Twitter wants to know about my phone number....
So, of course the insufferable NYT did a write up about it & tried to downplay what Griffith did, gave a voice to a hackers that are pissed he was arrested, and only made very brief mention about Griffith wanting to help them launder money.
