Do you know that 32% of Nigerian households (HHs) faced food shortages within the last 12 months of the NGHS?

This is part of findings from the National General Household Survey (NGHS) recently released in Dec 2019 by @nigerianstat.

Thread.
August was the month where food shortage was most experienced (40% of Households) & the lowest was February (13% of HHs).

By region, Households in South South experienced food shortage the most- 43% of HHs; SE- 42.8%; NE- 31%; SW- 31%; NW- 26% and NC- 17%.

HH-Households
Further findings showed that for 30days preceding the survey visits:

44% of Nigerian HHs reported being unable to eat a healthy & nutritious/preferred food due to lack of money

27% had to skip a meal because of lack of money

21% were hungry but did not eat b/c of lack of money
The most common shocks to households were increase in food prices, increase in price of inputs, flooding & theft of crops, cash, livestock or other property.

10% of households received safety net assistance and food is the common form of safety net assistance received.
Literacy is the self-reported ability to read and write in any language. From the results, Nigeria has a self-reported literacy rate of 69%.

It is much higher in urban (81%) than rural (64%) areas.

By region, SW has the highest– 82%. SS- 81%; SE- 80%; NW-66%; NC- 60% & NE-51%
School Attendance

The survey showed that 79% of children aged 5-14 years are attending school.

South South had the highest attendance rate of 97% followed by SE- 96.8%; SW- 95%; NC- 75%; NW- 71% and NE- 66%.

About 61% of Children (5-14) attend government schools.
Electricity

44.6% of households in Nigeria had no electricity.

The problem is more prominent in rural areas (57.6%) than in urban areas (16.1%).

NE has the highest share of households with no electricity (79.1%) while SS has the lowest (27.2%).
Household (HH) assets.

This is a key welfare indicator that reflects the socio-economic status of individuals.

Major HH assets are Mattress/bed/mat-> 99% of Nigerian HHs own this. Next is mobile phone (65%), radio (49%), TV (45%) & Fan (44%). Only 1.6% of HHs own A/Cs
9.6% of Nigerian households (number of households is different from number of Nigerians) own cars or other vehicles.

78% of the household group aged 10 years and above have ACCESS to mobile phone and 26% have access to internet.

Some useful data for financial inclusion:
This is particularly interesting. 62% of households own their place of residence.

The North West & North East had very high rates of ownership at 88% & 79% respectively.

South West had the lowest ownership at 26% but highest on Rented- 47%. I'm sure Lagos tops the list
Well, you can dig deeper to see the type of housing structure by region. The images would be useful.
Full report was released in December by the National Bureau of Statistics. @nigerianstat and can be downloaded here: nigerianstat.gov.ng/download/1030
