Labour leadership hopeful Ian Lavery:

Is a convicted football hooligan.

"That is why I have absolutely no respect for the police." 1/7
He was actually fined £200, not £1,000 that he claims.

Perhaps he might have remembered how much it was if he had paid the fine himself, and not got the NUM to pay it on his behalf, something which they appear to have done on many occasions (see upcoming thread). 2
He evidently liked showing his lack of respect for the police during the miners' strike, being the first arrested in Northumberland & was arrested at least '6 or 7 times' [too many to count?], usually for assaults on the police. 3
Ian's not one to hold a grudge:

"you were a scab then and you're still a scab. I was really pleased that it happened".

[Capital & Class, vol. 29, 3: pp. 29-42] 4
He has excellent green credentials, being the ex-chair of the National Union of Mineworkers, and apparently wants to reopen the mines! 5
Lavery was selected for Wansbeck in 2010, although it should have had an all-women shortlist.

'It now looks as though the legacy of Gordon Brown's political machine will be a set of poor candidates whose views reflect the outdated prejudices of the rank & file.' 6
Lavery is also a master of debate, renowned for his forensic questions, like this one:

Thread II will look at Lavery's rather murky financial arrangements (for the few, not the many) 7/7
If anyone wanted to know the score at the match that Lavery was arrested at, it was 1-1 (Newcastle Utd vs Manchester Utd).

Most games were called off because of snow, but Forest beat QPR (2-0), before going on a mid-winter tour of Iraq!
