A mosque seems to be already full w/ mourners over Soleimani's death. Footage is being broadcasted by state TV's channel 1. A cleric is signing his praises & talking about how his martyrdom will unite the regime. They may have followed morning prayers w/ a memorial ceremony #Iran
An interesting approach by the cleric in charge of the sermon in honor of Soleimani's death. Every few minutes, he rattles off a long list of Iranians who have been killed in #Syria & #Iraq attempting to place Soleimani as just one soldier among many others. #Iran

Thread: Major media outlets are painting an inaccurate pic of the targeted military parade in #Iran. They indicate that an elite group of IRGC members who are the custodians of the regime were attacked & killed. Of course a military parade in an enemy country has to be scary! 1/4
There is certainly a theatrical aspect to these gatherings were #Iran attempts to flaunt its military might w/ soldiers marching in determined strides & missiles in display. However, the atmosphere around it is not that different from a typical Memorial Day parade in the US. 2/4
Veterans of previous wars are remembered & honored. Women and children show up to watch the event. Some officials give a few speeches, people eat food, & a military band or two plays. Comical looks of some of the military units are often mocked by observers. 3/ #Iran

Qasem Soleimani's death is certain to escalate tensions between the US & Iran. Iran hardliners and neo-cons are celebrating, no doubt - they've been lusting for confrontation with Tehran and have just upped the ante. But you know who else is celebrating? Iraqis and Syrians.
Soleimani directed the murderous crackdown against Iraqi protesters and oversaw a genocide in Syria. He was the face of an expansionary sectarian project that pitted people against each other by fostering loyalists that would kill their own people, as Tehran carved up the region.
He was indispensable for his ability to keep Tehran's proxies united, and it has no operative to fill that role now. In Syria it might spell the end of Iran's goal to apply it's Iraqi blueprint of militias and loyalists, as it consolidates in Iraq & Lebanon in the midst of unrest

#Iran #IRGC cmdr #QassemSoleimani movement was not a secret because it was understood that his killing will create a response.

He was killed in #Iraq by a #US order and #Iran will hit the #US by Khamenei order.

That will drag a wider confrontation

#Iran #QassemSoleimani commander was due to visit #Turkey President Erdogan and had a visit scheduled to #Lebanon.

His trips were known for many. The assassination will not at all affect Iran military and operationally because no one is indispensable.
