A hot take that shouldn’t be a hot take:

Simply raising the #OW and #ODSP rates isn’t good enough.
Some thoughts:
1) If raising the rates is an interim measure towards a #UBI #GLBI, fine. But #OW and #ODSP are riddled with barriers and were not meant to create a living wage.
What do I mean? Well the #OW Act of 1997 defines ‘assistance’ as “life stabilization assistance and basic financial assistance” - no matter how you look at it, stabilization =/= thriving, living, equitable. It’s an interim fix to a structural failure.

MEMO TO: @hfxgov councillors.

Can surplus land be sold for $1.00 to accommodate #AffordableHousing? Can permit fees, subdivision fees, and zone amendment fees be waived when affordable housing projects are in the making? #CBRM #HRM #Halifax @CBRMGov…
We are grateful to Coun. Gordon MacDonald @tobinroader for keeping affordable housing on council agenda. As has been pointed out around the council table, affordable housing is not a municipal responsibility.

Thankfully though this doesn’t mean it can’t be a municipal priority. Image

Will ⁦@GeoffMacLellan⁩’s #affordablehousing task force do anything about #REIT’s?

REIT’s own or invest in income-producing real estate & distribute profits to their shareholders. Many are traded publicly on the stock market. #nspoli #Halifax…
2) @MichaelTGorman Nova Scotia's DM of housing said Wed. that non-profit housing will have to be "dramatically" expanded to address the province's housing crunch.

(Thus far both Geoff MacLellan and Tim Houston only seem interested in ‘market’ solutions.)…
3) One of the benefits of non-market housing is that the units remain affordable for the long term.

That's a key difference from many private developments that get govt. funding to include a handful of affordable units. #HRM @hfxgov @MikeSavageHFX @dubehalifax1 @HRMLovelace Image

Following on the second most exciting news in Ohio (@Bengals #WhoDey #RuleTheJungle) we’re using this week’s #GOPCThread to look closer at the land use implications of the recent #IntelOhio announcement.
On Jan 21, 2022, @GovMikeDeWine + @Intel officially announced the chip manufacturer would build at least 2 semi-conductor chip factories in New Albany, a suburb 25 minutes north east of downtown #Columbus.
The facilities will be built on undeveloped land, contiguous to the current New Albany International Business Park. The city has annexed much of the land from Jersey Township in Licking Co. (map courtesy of #NewAlbanyInternationalBusinessPark)

@Maria_Hinojosa @NewYorker @JonathanBlitzer I think one key issue is the fact that the same people who want America and Americans to welcome unlimited numbers of undocumented foreign citizens, abandoning their BIPOC-led sovereign independent home countries . . .

@Maria_Hinojosa @NewYorker @JonathanBlitzer . . . and hiring international criminal human trafficking organizations to guide them to our southwest border to make questionable asylum claims, then to live, at best, semi-documented, in what they constantly insist is a horribly and unredeemably racist country . . .

@Maria_Hinojosa @NewYorker @JonathanBlitzer . . . . and at the same time constantly complaining about @fightfor15 and #AffordableHousing, when an ample supply of relatively unskilled labor competes with US-based including American workers who now have leverage to negotiate and get a union.

It has been a busy end to 2021 for #affordablehousing in #NewJersey. A few examples of recent developments:
In #Hanover, ground broke on the first phase of a project that will produce 140 homes for very-low-, low-, and moderate-income families (all 2- and 3-bedrooms) and 32 supportive homes for those with special needs. Read more here:… Image

The final rules for #ARPA are still pending, but that hasn’t stopped cities & counties from starting to think about, collect input on, and deploy these important resources. This week’s #GOPCThread highlights themes we’re seeing in #Ohio.
.@ICMA surveyed its members thru mid-Sept ’21 and found, nationally, top priorities for local #ARPA $ were 1) sewer & water infrastructure improvements and 2) revenue replacement #GOPCThread…

I’ve been doing a side project lately, seeking to understand recent federal housing investments in historical context.

The graph below shows affordable housing units funded by the federal government between 1946 and 2019.
#affordablehousing #HousingForAll
This graph requires additional refinement, but essentially shows approved units and acquisitions under CMHC’s various programs through time. My source for these data is a CMHC publication entitled “Canadian Housing Statistics”, which was published continually from 1955 to 2012
You can find a link to each one of these reports here: Data for the National Housing Strategy + Investment in Affordable Housing are taken from a Progress Report on Housing Investments (Annex C), found here:

I’m a pretty new resident of #KitchenerCentre, but it’s obvious that something noteworthy happened here over the past couple of months – and the past couple of years – that saw @MorriceMike elected last night. It’s something that #cdnpoli, #onpoli & beyond should take note of. 🧵
In this riding, it seems that HOW a candidate shows up, serves their community and campaigns has proven to be as (or more) important as WHAT the candidate stands for.
To me, Mike’s victory is a triumph for a #leadership of humility, open-mindedness, respect, and grace – alongside a mandate to advocate for #affordablehousing, access to #healthcare, a livable #climate, etc.

The 3-day finale of #yyccc 2017-2021 was lit!!! It’s hard to believe the writers were able to get so many great things resolved. Also, so many cool things have been set up for the next show: 2021-2025 (which will start filming on Oct 18). Here’s my recap of the highlights: 1/24
The finale opened w emotion: 1) #yyc-based members of the #TokyoOlympics/#TokyoParalympics #teamcanada were honored. 2) tributes to the retiring members of #yyccc, @DruhFarrell @EWoolleyWard8 @ChahalGeorge @Ward4Ward1 @CouncillorKeats & @nenshi, induced tears & good vibes. 2/24
After almost exactly 4yrs of work initiated by my learning about #BenefitDrivenProcurement @FCSSAAoffice’s AGM right after the 2017 #yycvote, getting an NoM passed by #yyccc, & development shepherded by @momentumcalgary’s @HareCourtney, we’ve approved a great policy!!! 3/24

This morning @HonAhmedHussen announced fantastic news for #HamOnt - our government is making a historic investment in #AffordableHousing here, with over $145M to repair nearly 6,300 social housing units in our city!
This investment will have a real positive impact on people’s lives. Safe and stable housing is essential to our health and wellbeing. Many of these units will be for priority vulnerable groups, with almost half dedicated to seniors across the city.
Our government is working to ensure every Canadian has access to safe and affordable housing. In #Budget2021, we presented a plan to invest $2.5B and reallocate $1.3B in existing funding to make 35,000 affordable housing units available.

As we grapple with LA's failure to house its people, we want to reaffirm a commitment to equity and fairness in our approach. @CamnerLeonora wrote about why it is important for the #yimby movement to center WHERE to put housing and for WHOM:…
Abundant Housing LA is building the pro-housing movement for LA. But it’s not enough to just be supportive of housing in general. Achieving housing abundance requires thoughtful approaches that center equity, racial justice, and environmentalism.
Abundant Housing is committed to critically reexamining our approach to housing, our past positions, and direction in the context of equity and racial justice.
