My kid was a #NewYork ICU nurse when the 1st #COVID19 wave hit

She worked w/ 1 mask for 5/6 shifts, wore garbage bags as gown & had to re-use rubber gloves

She literally risked her life every day w/o PPE & @leezeldin told the world that Trump “overdelivered” resources
1/ Image
She worked mandated shifts, held the tablets for patients while their families said goodbye & watched people die droves. She couldn’t see her family for almost 4 mos because I’m immunosuppressed & she was afraid she would kill me

& @leezeldin ignored our pleas for help

2/
Instead @leezeldin jumped on the Trump disinformation bandwagon, the Kushner PPE theft ring & the holding hostage of aid to NY unless @NewYorkStateAG dropped her investigation into the Trump Org

& NYers were willing to literally give their lives rather than

(1/26) On April 18, Bob Woodward recorded Jared Kushner saying that Trump had taken control away from the doctors and was going to open the country back up. Why then? What was happening right around that time?
(2/26) Trump’s official national emergency declaration came on March 11, and most of the country shut down or at least went partway toward that outcome. The economy crashed and millions of Americans were laid off, but saving lives was, after all, the number one consideration.
(3/26) Trump put medical doctors on TV daily, the media was freaking out about refrigerated trucks carrying bodies away from New York hospitals, and doctors and nurses were our new national heroes.

No masks. No fear. No bowing to King Polis.

The @Bandimere family, @PatrickForCO @randycorporon & I are going to court to #StopTheCOVIDChaos. 5,500+ patriots joined us last night to stand up & #FightBack. Millions more across America also WALKING THE WALK to #ReopenAmerica.
Look: I triggered a local @9NEWS reporter during my speech at @Bandimere #StopTheCOVIDChaos protest last night when I urged people to ignore junk science and hug children.

CRY HARDER.
Fear-mongering journalist frets that #StopTheCOVIDChaos attendees refused to wear masks INSIDE THEIR CARS. How dare we decide to breathe freely inside our own freaking cars. Has he decried Antifa/BLM for violating laws while trashing Denver streets?

Before I decide someone is an idiot, I often actually follow through and really consider their idea, approach, or solution to a problem. Come along with me while we examine #OPENAMERICANOW.
1/
First of all, people like to talk tougher than they are and most people are liars. So they say stuff like “masks are for sissies” but if you watch them they only spend 20 minutes down at the capitol before running to the car and bathing in hand sanitizer. 2/
Some are actually going to go around a’hugging and a’kissing every stranger they meet in the next few weeks.

And what of it? 3/

I had a conversation yesterday about an old colleague of mine, white guy, early 40's living in the mid-west. It's a scary reminder of what the LONG term consequences of #coronavirus will be even as the Trump administration rushes to pre-maturely #ReOpenAmerica
40-something married professional white guy had been doing all the right things during #coronavirus . He lives with his wife who, as a cancer survivor, had a compromised immune system and his elderly mother in law. They'd been in #selfquarantine for months just to be safe
Somehow he contracted #coronavirus . Must've been on a rare trip to the grocery or drug store. He didn't go anywhere else. It got bad quickly, breathing difficulties put him on a ventilator. He managed to survive #Covid_19 but in many ways that's where the real challenge starts

Thread on my #CovidDataProject: #ReOpenAmerica edition.

For those not familiar with my work, the original (and still primary) aim of my model was to answer the question, “Where would we be on #COVID19 deaths had @realDonaldTrump acted quickly and responsibly?” The answer is

1/x
is shocking. As of midnight UTC last night, we stood at 72,271 deaths, and my model shows 90.905%, 65,698 American souls, would still be alive had he acted quickly. In other words, this would have been another tragic but relatively small blip on the epidemic radar, similar in
scale to the #SwineFlu under @BarackObama. And that’s without taking into account the added deaths globally, those caused by America’s failure to act.

Another, secondary goal has been predictive, looking at trends to make an educated guess about where we’re headed. That’s

A COVID 19 story. I’m tired of quarantine. I have been home since Mar 17. I’m higher risk due to AI suppress drugs and help care for my elderly parents, so I have been cautious from the start. I’m incredibly fortunate to still have my very good job w a company that cares 1/n
And I’m quarantined with a great person and a delightfully entertaining puppy, in a beautiful house. So, yeah - I can’t pretend to know what it’s like to not have those things. But I can tell you, 3 miles away my 40yo nephew is fighting for his life. Saturday night his heart 2/n
Stopped for an unknown length of time. He was revived, intubated and is in ICU. The cause: clotting issues related to COVID (he was briefly hospitalized w respiratory symptoms a couple weeks ago but seemed to have recovered just fine). Now, he’s unresponsive and

Things I am over - hypocrisy and inconsistency

1) If peaceful #protest on the steps of government buildings is a right, than it also is on a football field #TakeAKnee, in a park, etc

#Thread #equity #rant (1/8)
2) If we ban #guns from some buildings in the interest of security, that means for all people - not just those that aren't white

3) If #BlueLivesMatter, do not risk our brave protectors’ health by protesting near them without #masks

#MichiganProtest (2/8)
4) If you are not wearing #facemasks given your personal #liberty, than why do women not get extended the same for #Reproductiverights

5) If all life is sacred, than why would we sacrifice 2-3% of our population by #ReopenAmerica too quickly?

Today in #DetectingDeception is ignoring the base rate - a problem we are seeing in the coverage of the #ReopenAmerica protests, particularly in photos and videos. #Thread newsobserver.com/news/politics-…
2/ Photos and videos are more compelling when they show emotion, and compelling art engages audiences. But when coverage is limited to the most emotional, the bigger picture can get lost.
3/ Consider this photo taken by the AP at a rally yesterday in Ohio. Looks like a busy protest, right? I’ve marked one of the emotional bits with a star.

Time to resume elective surgery cases? A thread summarizing new guidance out today from the @AmCollSurgeons #COVID19

1/I wrote this column for @JewishJournal after I watched teens, families, seniors freely wander DC days ago. @POTUS @VP must issue a national lockdown order. Now. Immediately. That’s the only way to get control of #COVIDー19.

2. Not all people are highly attuned to danger. In the neurobiology of threat assessment, people’s histories as well as our genetics affect our brains’ responses to a threatening event, according to clinical neuropsychologist @orlipeter
3. @orlipeter said there are 2 types of responses people can make in the face of an uncertain external threat: underreacting & overreacting. “In times of a serious threat, like the COVID19 pandemic, the response that most likely guarantees your survival is overreacting,” she said

Saying #ReopenAmerica for the “economy” means you’re not seeing those who’ve kept America open at great risk to themselves and for whom this “economy” does little.

The figures I quote in my video are from here:

Among the American workforce, just 16.2% of Latinx workers and 19.7% of Black Americans are able to work from home, while about 30% of whites and 37% of Asian-Americans can. #COVID19

If governments/the State (as in nation) want to stay relevant, they should be saying “Everyone stay home, we will pay salaries and keep the economy afloat till it’s safe again to be out.”

That’s if the “economy” is for everyone.

For Trump & billionaires, the economy is for them
Who HAS been keeping America open: it is always about race, class & gender:

Among the US workforce, just 16.2% of Hispanic workers and 19.7% of Black Americans are able to work from home, while about 30% of whites and 37% of Asian-Americans can. #COVID19 google.com/amp/s/www.vice…
Fuck #ReopenAmerica

As if it closed down. Pay attention to those who are KEEPING IT OPEN.

And understand this “economy” Trump et al are rushing to save doesn’t give a fuck about those who at great risk to their lives have been keeping America open

Thread: Both staying home for months and the idea to #ReopenAmerica are not ideal situations. Both will have hardship, death and a myriad of other issues associated to it. If we close down for months: Depression, suicide, hunger, poverty, stroke & cardiovascular deaths will rise.
The last recession led to an estimated 10,000 more suicides and 15-20% increases in stroke & cardiovascular related deaths. A deep economic depression would have a big body count, as will reopening from COVID-19. That’s reality. So we must weigh which produces less devastation.
There’s no right or wrong answer, both are NOT ideal. Hindsight will be 20/20 for everyone who wants to criticize either direction. Everyone needs to be ready for the fact that both options have downsides. It’s a lose-lose but with strong leadership we will make it through this.

Hi everyone. I'm one of those restaurant workers, a former entrepreneur, and a student of foreign policy. I can't believe our system is so broken we can't protect our citizens from #COVIDー19 the way South Korea can, but I've been developing a solution for ~2 years. Thread, 1/x
Yes, our country is embroiled in political gridlock. Yes, our country is divided. But it has been since our country's founding. The sooner we disabuse ourselves of the notion that it's #SenateDemocrats' or #SenateRepublicans' fault, the better. 2/x
I don't say this as a facile "it's always been this way" response. The fact is that we are a network of 150-plus-year-old settlements that sought religious freedom and self-determination. We determined our borders initially by rivers and geographic coordinates, not culture. 3/x
