🇬🇪I try not to react to #Georgia-n politicians’ tasteless & baseless attacks but now I was left no choice.

I met Ms #Tsulukiani when she was a young, aspiring politician & a lawyer. Sad to see how she radicalised over the years & is now spreading lies & disinformation.
2/7
Ms #Tsulukiani knows best that I was & am one of the biggest critics of #Saakashvili’s regime & fought for the right of 🇬🇪 people to democratically elect their government. Accusing me of colluding with #UNM is a deliberate lie that no reasonably thinking person will believe.

#GD’s disinformation is reaching the #Kremlin’s level. GD is not #Georgia, criticizing GD is not the same as criticizing 🇬🇪. This is why I call myself a Friend of Georgia, not a “Friend of GD”. Stop hiding behind the country’s good name. Take responsibility for YOUR failures.

Here is a terrible, truly terrible, piece on #Georgia in @jacobin magazine. I won’t link to it, it's not worth your time, other than to show just how truly deluded many socialists in the US are, in making excuses for the #SovietUnion & #Russia. 1/n
That part really deserves attention and key takeaway: don’t trust a *single* paragraph of what you read in #Jacobinmag, if you do not know the issue yourself. (hello @DemSocialists) CC @ichbinilya @GilbreathDustin 2/
"Since the end of the Soviet Union, Western-oriented development has not only failed to address Georgia’s problems but reinforced them." With all these falsehoods, one doesn't even know where to begin. 3/n

“Let's start with the most dramatic and bloody events about Ossetia and Abkhazia. the problems of South Ossetia and Abkhazia have been dragging on for a long time, they did not arise during the time of Putin or even during the reign of Yeltsin, they are much older… 🧵
…The conflict between Abkhazians and Georgians dates back hundreds of years. During the time of Stalin, who was a Georgian, there was a forced Georgification of Abkhazia. That is, Georgians moved to the territory of Abkhazia and had to assimilate there…🧵

Good piece by @scharap on #US - #Russia -#Ukraine puzzle. Short THREAD with my own reflections on Sam's thoughts.
1/ Charap's reasoning is most realist & reasonable of other proposals coming from Washington these days on how to contain & deter #Russia over #Ukraine. Perhaps,RU does seek to change status-quo but this,as many in #Moscow see it,exactly what #US has sought to do in last 6+ years
2/ In any case, what @scharap proposes seems to be the best option in the given situation - avoiding a major war should be the focus. Containing RUS is much needed from #US standpoint, but this policy too has its own limits & #Putin made it clear the limit been reached.

I recently submitted my PhD dissertation titled "Illiberalism Beyond Borders. Dissecting Russian and Turkish External Influence in Bosnia and Georgia" at @FU_Berlin. Interested in what I found? Read this thread ⬇️
To begin with, I hypothesise that illiberal external influence (IEX) is more likely to contribute to the contestation of #democracy in a given polity when it appears in the context of a favorable domestic environment and the absence of liberal external counterpressure.
I particularly scrutinise the role of domestic elites in facilitating/obstructing IEX, based on findings by J. Tolstrup, @otansey, R. Vanderhill et al. I also look at how liberal ext. counterpressure can help prevent a major contribution of IEX to the contestation of #democracy.
