Thread on new Immigration detention Executive Order. THIS. WAS. ALL. A. TRAP.

(Background) I spent 10 years as a counterterrorism prosecutor at ICE and then 4 years as a manager w/ the Dept of Labor’s Immigration program.

Toward the end of the Bush administration, there was a huge controversy regarding the detention of young immigrant children with their families. The visuals of 3 year olds walking around in orange jumpsuits was shocking. 2/x

The most well known of these facilities is the T. Don Hutto Residential Center in Texas. Due to the outrage and several lawsuits, ICE changed its a policy. The detention would now be temporary. 3/x

This allowed DHS to vet the families for background checks and bond them out as soon the checks came back. 4/x

With the advancements in technology, ICE was able to ensure that the families were trackable, and the families were able to present their cases in front of an immigration judge pursuant to US law and out international obligations. 5/x

I actually won an award while at ICE during the response to the lawsuits about Hutto. 6/x

The Trump administration weaponized these detentions by ripping kids from their parents. You have seen the pictures, heard the secret audio tape of the crying babies. This new Executive Order is being painted as a "compromise.” 7/x

This devil's deal is to now detain these kids in jail WITH their parents. No more bonds. No more evaluation for threat to safety. Under the Immigration and Nationality Act, no judge has jurisdiction to grant the family bonds. Totally at discretion of DHS. 8/x

So while everyone is exhaling and celebrating, realize that we have now gone back to babies in jail in jumpsuits with their parents. Something we had put behind us a decade ago. This is not a win. Do not back down. 9/x

PS - the last few days I have been inundated with requests to help friends respond to their conservative family members/acquaintances/etc who say that these children are either not being detained or that this is because of Congress. 10/x

Well the EO proves that it was happening, this Administration caused it, and this Administration could have stopped it at anytime. 11/x
