Macron lost: he failed to convince his peers of the French strategy and faced isolation. And it was Merkel who delivered this message to him, leading from the middle.
If the (French-led) "European renaissance" Macron is talking about shall have a chance to succeed, the French president must become much better in building critical mass among European leaders, and by including interests of others. Big speeches and op-eds won't do it.
