My new essay for @TheAtlantic on the irreconcilability of Palestinian and Israeli narratives—and why the US, unless it's willing to put serious pressure on Israel, is better off disengaging: theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/…
I have a bias. My starting assumptions about human motivation push me to particular conclusions, as I discuss below 👇🏽

It's *not* the economy, stupid
Facts gather import when they're embedded in narratives. I don't agree with the Israeli narrative (I don't believe 2000's "generous offer" was, in fact, generous). But it's also hard to say that the Israeli narrative is, in any definitive sense, wrong. After all, it's a narrative
Maybe this is my naiveté speaking, but anyone who thinks Ehud Barak's "generous offer" was generous should at least consider the opposing narrative that it was anything but. You don't need to be convinced by it, but you can't understand the Palestinian side without considering it
For why Ehud Barak's "generous offer" wasn't generous, one of the definitive accounts is @Rob_Malley & Hussein Agha's exhaustive postmortem in @nybooks: nybooks.com/articles/2001/…
