So our new #MEPs (73 from the UK) are ready to take their seats on July 2nd at the first #EPlenary session. europarl.europa.eu/unitedkingdom/…
Here's a reminder of some of the things they do. 1/ europarl.europa.eu/about-parliame…
#myMEPs
Far from being unelected bureaucrats, as is sometimes suggested, #MEPs are the only office holders in the EU set-up who are directly elected by the voting-age public. 2/

MEPs form one branch of the EU legislature, the bit that passes laws. The other branch is the Council of national ministers. 3/ @EUCouncil
europarl.europa.eu/factsheets/en/…
The most common method for passing law is known as the ordinary legislative procedure (sometimes called co-decision). 4/
europarl.europa.eu/external/html/…
MEPs and government ministers receive proposals from the Commission and bat them back and forth up to three times, amending as they go. 5/
In the EP, an MEP from one of the cross-group parliamentary committees draws up a report on a Commission proposal. The committee votes on it and usually amends it. 6/
europarl.europa.eu/committees/en/…
The text then goes to #Eplenary (sitting of the whole House), where it can be further revised before being voted on. 7/
Votes are usually by a show of hands but if that doesn't produce a clear result, each MEP has a secure voting button which only s/he can use with their personal card 8/
Individual MEPs and groups can and do of course vote against certain reports and the EP as a whole can reject Commission proposals. 9/
The EP also keeps tabs on the Commission. It elects the President. 10/
europarl.europa.eu/news/en/press-…
It interviews (and can reject) nominees for Commissioner posts put forward by each Member State. 11/
ec.europa.eu/commission/com…
And it can sack the whole Commission. 12/
So anyone who tells you that the EP is just a rubber stamp for the Commission is wrong. The @Europarl_EN is a fully functioning democratic legislator with real powers. Ends.
