Too many Brexiteers seem to think that Britain "won the War" by shouting "tally ho" & waving a rolled umbrella at the Wehrmacht. Operations like D-Day involved an astonishing amount of planning, attention to detail and, above all, close scrutiny of the things that could go wrong.
I love shows like Dad's Army, but sometimes wonder whether they've warped our memory of WW2. They've fed a self-image of wartime Britain as bumbling, amateurish but plucky, not as a military superpower with a global empire. And that feeds the delusion that "pluck" is all we need.
This, by David Reynolds, is excellent on the astonishing level of planning that went into D-Day, and the detailed attention to the risks involved. (Thanks to @ProfJCharmley for the reference). newstatesman.com/world/europe/2…
