This morning we participated in the International Summit of Colleges, Universities, and Ministers of Education at the sideline of the 74th UN General Assembly facilitated by @UNDPAfrica Advocating for the need to advocate for #SDG4. #UNGA74 #UNGA
We are here to say to the people of our continent that what happened in South Africa a few weeks ago does not represent the South Africa of Nelson Mandela. It cannot be correct that a minority would want to attack our brothers and sisters from the African Continent. #UNGA74
"In order for education outcomes to translate into better labour market outcome, we need to have adoptive policies, with inherent monitoring and evaluation instruments which will easily detect the success and failure in skilling for the labour market." #UNGA @UNDPAfrica
"We are working on ensuring that our education system equips school leavers with the cognitive skills required for innovation, creativity and problem solving. " #UNGA @UNDPAfrica
This will alleviate the challenge of many post-school students joining institutions with insufficient preparation that prevent them from progressing efficiently through the educational cycle, which unduly prolongs the time to complete a qualification."
@UNDPSouthAfrica
Many African countries have rigid school curricula that exclude practical skills learning such as ICT, agriculture, artisanship, design and technology. These need to be addressed through educational reforms that encompass vocational training" #UNGA @UNDPSouthAfrica
On the continent, current low participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) subjects is a big concern as these form the basis of skills required for the 4IR." @UNDPSouthAfrica #UNGA #UNGA74
South Africa has already established a Presidential Commission on the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) which will assist government in taking advantage of the opportunities presented by the digital industrial revolution." @UNDPSouthAfrica #UNGA74 #UNGA
We also need to improve the relevance of the curriculum by putting emphasis on the teaching and learning of sciences, improve teachers’ support and training including material and resources used for teaching, expand ICT and other school infrastructure." @UNDPSouthAfrica #UNGA
Over the past 25 years of democracy in our country, there has been solidarity between the people of South Africa and its institutions of higher learning with our fellow Africans on the continent." @UNDPSouthAfrica #UNGA
We are proud of the number of students, lecturers and scholars from our continent who continue to make a positive contribution to our higher education system." @UNDPSouthAfrica #UNGA74 #UNGA
Through this interaction and collaboration, we must continue to strengthen our cooperation on matters of education as well in other areas, in order for us to attain the Sustainable Development Goals Vision 2030 as well as Africa Agenda 2063 – An Africa we want." #UNGA #UNGA74
We also need platforms of engagement among Africans all over the world to be able to register progress. Africans in the Diaspora have an important role to play in this regard. Let us join hands to make Africa a place of hope." #UNGA #UNGA74 @UNDPSouthAfrica
We ended the Summit on #SDG4 with the signing of an MOU between @UNDPAfrica and the Historically Black Colleges and Universities / Primarily Black Institutions (HBCU/PBIs). #UNGA
