The only thing clear tonight is Netanyahu is still prime minister and will remain prime minister until someone else has a majority in the Knesset and is sworn in. And that doesn't seem to be happening anytime soon. Yes. He lost the election last week. But Gantz didn't win. Yet. >
Rivlin will do his best but Netanyahu won't listen. They loathe each other. After the 3-way meeting he will go back to the PM's residence. Gantz won't have a majority, Likud won't kick him out and even an indictment, won't move him without a High Court decision. Perhaps not even>
Netanyahu has absolutely no reason to hurry. Perhaps Lieberman will return to the coalition. Perhaps Gantz will capitulate. Perhaps there'll be a war. Maybe his lawyers will convince the A-G to drop some of the charges. It his 70th birthday in a month. He'll still be in office. >
Netanyahu's bet is that he can wait them all out. Gantz, Lieberman, Rivlin, Mandelblit, the Likud ministers, someone will blink before he does. Or the clock runs down and Israel holds a 3rd election, with him still as prime minister, deep in to 2020.
I still think that Netanyahu is unlikely to survive last week's election result for more than a few months. He'll be pushed out ultimately by a combination of political and legal pressure. But these are going to be long and nerve-wracking months.
