Donald Trump decides to abondon Kurds, longtime US allies, as he gives go ahead for Turkish invasion of Kurdish areas of Syria/Iraq.

Phone call yesterday between Trump & the Turkish President sealed the Kurds’ fate.
TV footage now show mass withdrawal of US army forces from northern Syria to clear the way for Turkish army to clear out the US allies - the Kurds.
A reminder that the Kurds were hailed as the heroes of humanity just 6 months ago after defeating ISIS and freeing innumerable slaves and captives.
Worth also noting that the US is not being “forced out under fire” it is simply surrendering land and people to the Turkish military & Putin allies.

Indeed surrendering people that are still officially US allies and have died in large numbers for this coalition with the US
BBC finally getting round to reporting on this.

Gentle use of the phrase “clearing out Kurdish soldiers” by Radio 4 Today presenters. Barely 2 minutes spent on the issue. Then the news moves on.
Even if you favour completely amoral cynical politics what Trump is doing to the Kurds makes no sense even in US’s own interests.

Entire Middle East knows the Kurds have been the most loyal pro western people there.

Trump basically telling everyone never to trust the US again.

UK govt has threatened atleast 2 East European countries with a reduction in security & other ‘non EU specific’ cooperation if they “work with parliament to block/delay Brexit”.
Many of you have probably already seen this. A few of you will even know who wrote it.

Britain is heading towards a very dark place right now.

The Spectator USA (the new sister version of its much older British magazine) is now pushing the “Russian solution” to Ukraine.
One can see why it would - this is Trump’s policy - but don’t kid yourself this is “Conservative” - it’s not it’s rightwing Putin appeasement.

I must admit i’ve some affection for the old Spectator - sure it was more conservative than me. But I detected hints of young fogeyism in myself in my 20s so expected to “grow into it”.

Not anymore, if you’re still buying it as a conservative then you really need to wake up.

As befits a conservative publication it was often quite wary of the USA. Unashamedly posh “the Speccie” ploughed an oft lonely furrow of detached moral nostalgic conservatism - upholding standards that the rest of society no longer adhered to.

Internal UK govt briefing prepared for Theresa Villliers concludes that UK will not be able to resist pressure to massively weaken environment & health standards in pursuit of trade deals post Brexit & this will..”irreparably damage the environment & public health”.
The FT is interestingly also now reporting that Liz Truss & DIT are pressurising UK govt to “accommodate to US asks”.

There’s a lot more info on this subject about to come out.
There’s a very interesting & underreported devolution issue in here too.

Scots & Welsh have devolved SPS powers - this was not so important while UK was in single market - but now outside could see 3/4 utterly different SPS regulated agricultural markets inside post Brexit UK...

#Iran is not the same country when I came into office. They were involved in 18 conflict zones. Much of the funds provided in the ridiculous 2015 nuclear deal.
We're looking for no nuclear weapons, no ballistic weapons & a long period.

1-Lebanon had its civil war & now uses unwritten confessional system based on 1932 census to keep the peace. It is “practically” partitioned with each sect largely living alone. (Dahie, Hamra, Kaslik)

As for Iraq & Syria ==>
2-#Iraq had its Tsunami over a decade ago. A minority sect was forcefully removed from power by the US Army. Keeping the peace has required hard work - Witness the rise of #ISIS and the Mosul takeover. Like Lebanon “Practical” partition has also been the modus operandi
3-As for #Syria , the leadership always tried to distinguish the country’s society from those of Lebanon & Iraq by suppressing / refusing to bring sectarian tendencies out in the open. Syria was to be above the rest of the region. We were all just Arab nationalists Wu Khalas

BREAKING - #ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-#Baghdadi revealed in-person on new #ISIS video post-#Caliphate defeat in #Syria-#Iraq.

He appears in fine health, despite reports of severe injury.
I'm honestly unconvinced that this "diminished" point translates over to #ISIS & its existing/possible support base.

To me, this seems like a Western-centric point from which to analyze a video containing #Baghdadi's 2nd appearance in ~5yrs - a big deal.

#pt: For #ISIS, the struggle is theologically infinite - it isn't "defeated" or "prevented" by territorial losses.

e.g. #Trump's #Syria withdrawal announcement in #Dec '18 would have been perceived as a sign of eventual victory.

- #Baghdadi's video = fuel, not sign of weakness.
