The capture of #Zojila was one of the most important operations of 1947-48 #JammuKashmir war. It not only established the supremacy of the Indian Army, it saved Ladakh from falling into the hands of the enemy.
On this fateful day on November 1st, in 1948 young Capt SDS Jamwal of 7 Cavalry, with his 11 Tanks cleared Zojila Pass of Pakistani Army's occupation. This enabled a passage for linking up with Leh garrison, which was surrounded by Pak Invaders descending from Skardu side.
Coy of 5/8 GR supposed to be supporting Captain Jamwal’s break through, made contact with him much later on the other side.
Young Captain Jamwal 's dare devilry of breaking through the enemy defense also contributed to changing the fortunes of Leh.
Now retired & a Colonel, Col Jamwal from #Jammu is 94 & has the entire story verbatim.
Salute to the #IndianArmy & their tanks that rumbled in at 11,500ft.
Also salute to veterans of #BattleofZojila & local heros like Col Jamwal.
