1/ A SHORT FRACKING THREAD

A triple whammy of terrifying climate news today shows the paramount planetary importance of STOPPING U.S. FRACKING OPERATIONS.

First from Axios:

As climate change worsens, America blows past the world in oil and natural gas axios.com/america-blows-…
2/ In other words: The US is now #1 in the world in extracting, burning, exporting oil and gas. The resulting emissions is pushing the world past the limit on temp rise—1.5 degrees—necessary to avoid runaway unfixable catastrophe.

US oil and gas is blowing it for everybody.
3/ Fracking is still called “unconventional” drilling but in fact it is now the dominant method for getting oil and gas out of the bedrock. In the US, fracking accounts for most new oil and gas production, says the US Energy Information Administration. eia.gov/todayinenergy/…
4/ Ergo, the fight to stabilize the planet’s climate necessarily means keeping US oil and gas in the ground and because fracking is now the engine driving US oil and gas extraction, the fight to save the planet is a fight to stop US fracking operations and allied infrastructure.
4/ In other words, the fight to stabilize the climate depends on leaving US oil and gas in the bedrock and because #fracking is the engine that brings US oil and gas out the bedrock, the fight to save the earth requires a fight to stop US fracking and ancillary infrastructure.
5/ Second, this new NYT report today in which reporters go all @TXsharon and show plumes of climate-killing methane pouring from US oil/gas operations—in addition to the emissions already tallied.

This is the accelerant in the hands of the arsonist.
6/ And then, the tragic denouement: after bringing the whole Earth to the cliff of destruction, the US natural gas #fracking industry is crashing. Not fast enough to save our ecology but poised to sink our economy. nytimes.com/2019/12/11/bus…
7/ So it seems to me that what’s required is an all-out fight to swiftly sunset the US fracking industry, which should go the way of lead paint and decorative ashtrays. And yet I don’t see US Big Green groups waging this fight—with @foodandwater and @CenterForBioDiv as exceptions
8/ That means it’s up to us as citizens to take this on as a part of a mass mobilization. Which is daunting. But the statewide fracking bans in NY, MD, OR, WA and VT show that victory is possible. FIN
