Chancellor’s predecessor tells BBC UK will give way on April 2020 digital tax plan...
“We plan to go ahead with our digital tax in April” Chancellor @sajidjavid says at Davos panel alongside Treasury Secretary and French finance minister
US Treasury Secretary Mnuchin at #wef2020 : "If people want to just arbitrarily put taxes on our digital companies we will consider arbitrarily putting taxes on car companies"... with Chancellor next to him.
Mnuchin when asked specifically about whether UK would face tariffs rather than get a trade deal with a tech tax, gestures to Chancellor:
“We’re going to have some private conversations about that... and
I’m sure the President and Boris will be speaking on it as well”...
Pretty clear that the US Treasury Secretary is saying he expects UK to negotiate privately introduction of tech tax in April and if talks with Chancellor here don’t work out the President will deal with PM Boris Johnson...

Blimey - challenger bank with 250k customers, backed by Facebook- backer Peter Thiel and Tencent, says it leaving UK over lack of post Brexit passporting...

But the Bank of England’s “temporary permissions regime” offering a three year grace period would still apply...
Not clear what changed since 2018 opening, long after Brexit vote.

Interesting though that under TPR all deposit takers would have to abide by Financial Services Compensation Scheme and PRA deposit rules - presumably a cost implication not currently required under EEA passport
Seems in the press statement to be a reference to the timings in the Withdrawal Agreement - which I take as a reference to the refusal to extend implementation phase, and so requiring the bank to plan on basis of no trade deal/ no passporting and the temporary permissions regime

Just interviewed the Chancellor of the Exchequer at a Birmingham bus shelter on zero growth, the EU “changing its mind” on a prolonged form of financial services equivalence ... and on the end of frictionless trade.

Chancellor Sajid Javid, asked to confirm that frictionless trade with the EU was “over”:

“Of course, we are not going to have completely frictionless trade because we have left customs union & single market...and that is a deliberate decision...” /2
“...because we have a better future as an independent sovereign nation trading with European friends, but also trading more so with the rest of the world”. /3

New: UK GDP did not grow in final quarter of 2019 - 0.0%
“Manufacturing output fell sharply” and has now fallen for three consecutive quarters... but service sector also slowed to near stagnation of 0.1%.
2019 annual figure comes in at a sluggish 1.4%, a touch higher than year before. Q4 2019 on Q4 2018 growth of 1.1%, not been lower in a decade since last recession.

But Q3 revised up to 0.5, and December monthly figures up 0.3%...

#Breaking - Some defense sources report #Indian air strikes across the Line of Control in Muzafarabad, #Pakistan. Indian air force briefing expected later today. Pakistan said Indian jets dropped their payloads & "fled". More confirmation of details needed.
There are also reports of dual, air and ground Indian strikes in Pakistan occupied Jammu and Kashmir. No official word yet. Waiting for updates. Stay tuned.
There are also reports that 2 Pakistani JF-17s fighter jets have been shot down.
