Bernie doesn’t mention Canadian’s taxes pay for universal healthcare. He doesn’t address wait times, an issue in universal systems.

Lawmakers disregard the majority so a minority can be assured of short wait times. Waiting for access is an issue. How would Bernie address it? 🤷🏻‍♀️
Canadian plutocracy doesn’t like paying taxes to cover healthcare any more than US. The last 40 years, policies creating underfunding have starved universal healthcare in Canada & increased wait times. It’s a tactic to increase pressure for two tiered healthcare.
Canadian lawmakers haven’t been able to maintain appropriate levels of funding for healthcare. What would Bernie do to ensure a healthcare system in every state is adequately funded?

Bernie’s plan to maintain adequate funding for healthcare? Tax the rich.
Yeah, but how? How will large increases in taxes be passed by House & Senate? There will certainly still be Republicans elected. Using far right rhetoric to counter tax increases. Bernie doesn’t discuss that plan. But it feels good to say “tax the rich, tax the corporations.”
Its a pipe dream. Tax increases are unpopular & difficult to enact. Even Trumps cronies had a difficult time agreeing on cuts. Getting enough support will be twice as difficult. If it’s the first thing done, like Obama Care, it will be used to defeat Democrats in mid terms.
That is reality. It would eliminate all the promises Bernie makes from ever being achieved. Tax reform requires buy in, support, agreement. In a huge nation like the US, with thousands of lobbyists paid by the wealthiest to stop any progress. Likelihood of being passed, slim.
But it’s a nice dream. It’s a wonderful objective. Impossible to implement without national support. I guarantee Republicans would undermine this effort with ultimate vehemence.
And therein lies the problem. Republicans are obstructing progress across the nation.

Any progressive policy effort will receive overwhelming resistance from the far right. Why, because the nation is being pushed to extremism on either end of the political spectrum.
Any attempt to implement progressive policy is being blocked. Obstructed. Prevented. All existing progressive policies are being attacked and systematically removed by the far right.

But no one, including Bernie, calls out this obstructionism. Watching this is surreal.
Bernie, and by no means is he the only presidential candidate doing this, continues to call out & ignores the obvious obstructionism and proposes immediate fixes, like that would change anything. It won’t. And Bernie knows it.
His solutions are to call for immediate fixes. Policies to ameliorate the attacks from the far right.

It’s a continual struggle on the left and right for moral and political dominance. A dance around the central issue: obstructionism from the far right.
The problem I have with Bernie isn’t his proposed policies. Just like it wasn’t entirely Elizabeth May’s policies that irked me, or Jagmeet Singh’s.

It’s continuing to offer them as solutions when the mere mention of progressive policy has become a dirty word.
It’s become INTOLERABLE to large portions of the population in Canada and the US to even utter the very thought of human rights, regulation of capitalism, social supports, universal programs.

But no one points that out. Centrists vary in their understanding of this phenomenon.
Many centrists continue to try to find common areas to collaborate and reduce the tensions between their policies and the far right. But not democratic socialists. They continue to ignore obstructionism & add fuel to the fire, accusing centrists of siding with the far right.
What is the result of this strategy taken on by the far left democratic socialists? Further entrenchment, deeper division and increased intensity of the obstructionism of the far right. It increases the volatility and ideological rhetoric from the far right.
Step back & watch the dynamic and stop focussing on the individual issues. It’s very easy to see. Far right proposes populist austerity policy, far left counters with equally populist progressive policy. Followed by uproar and indignation on both ends of the political spectrum.
Further division of the electorate ensues. Centrists are left scrambling to address the tensions. Some offer compromise, some offer cooperation. It’s theatre. Predictable scripted theatre.

And Bernie is a willing and complicit actor in this political theatre.
He knows damn well he can not implement any changes to healthcare, education, unions, immigration, taxes, wages, or even reduce voter suppression. But he continues to promise them all the same. The current political environment in US, and Canada, is unsustainable.
Continued pressure on western democracies using this tactic is straining the political system & will eventually lead to the electorate abandoning social democracy. Nothing is accomplished, obstructionism blocks any progress.
The electorate is completely disregarded by both far left & far right in a fight for ideological dominance with the common goal of toppling social democracy.

This scenario is being played out globally in every western social democracy. Every last one.
The far left & far right are partnering to eliminate social democracy. Who is winning? The far right. They represent the wealthiest of society. They have the economic means to ensure success. Plus, they cheat and manipulate elections. Because they are a minority within society.
The far left is hedging a bet on the fact there are more votes on the left than on the right.

But to implement pure socialism, first, social democracy needs to be eliminated. That’s close to being fully accomplished. The electorate is fed up & desperate. Struggling to survive.
The far right prevents democracy using obstructionism. The far left antagonizes the far right’s voters by presenting pure socialist policy. Exacerbating tensions & animus towards each end of the political spectrum and eliminating any opportunity for social democracy to function.
Hate to say it, but social democracy pretty much died the day these two entities joined forces. It no longer exists in US or Canada in a form that is functional to meet the needs of citizens.

Can it be saved?

Only if we acknowledge what is wrong.
We have 2 ideological entities attempting to eliminate social democracy by continuously opposing any attempt to use socially democratic principles. Both are competing to install a new system using democratic voting. But that’s where democracy ends. At the voting booth.
One wants Ordered Liberty. Also known as guided democracy. Heavily reliant on Christian dogma to inform policy, this entity absolves itself of any wrongdoing by providing the end goal as justification. Hierarchy, social stratification & entrenched injustice, conservatism.
Another entity wants to completely eliminate the wealth class & ensure poor citizens are the beneficiaries of the capitalist wealth that’s already been created. But they also want to change the economy, social structure and political systems. Complete overhaul to socialism.
Anyone else but me recognize there are two revolutionary political movements blocking any real democracy from existing? Ideologues have hijacked the political system and are holding us all for ransom. Change the political system or live in continuous acrimony.
Democratic norms have been obliterated. Law and order is determined through the eyes of the victim, or the oppressor. Institutions are impediments to political aspirations.

Social democracy is a faint memory in some gen x and boomer minds. Mine’s gen x.
You want to support Bernie or the multitudes of NDP in Canada. Go ahead. But don’t try to gaslight me into believing the far left has any desire for democracy. They’re the other side of the populist coin. Fully complicit participants in the destruction of social democracy.
I like social democracy. And I’ll do just about anything legal & ethical to keep it on life support. So will millions of Canadians. And I’m hoping, millions of Americans will too. But Bernie is a populist. So there’s that.
The problem is only one group of people are trying to preserve social democracy. Centrists. We are being attacked from both ends of the political spectrum.

Acknowledge that & it improves our chance of success.
