Nearly 15 yrs ago, 8 dead bodies washed up on the coast of Banjul, Gambia. It was the beginning of a saga that wld reveal how then President, Yahya Jammeh, ordered the #massmurder of 54 irregular #WestAfrican migrants. It's the story of #Jammeh2Justice...

Of the 56 #WestAfricans murdered, at least 44 were from Ghana. Others came from #Nigeria, Senegal, Togo. They were looking to go to Spain through irregular routes when their boat detoured inexplicably into the Banjul harbour.

The killings were done by an elite #hitsquad maintained by Jammeh as President. They were called #TheJunglers. They claimed that migrants were supposed to be part of a team of #mercenaries sent to overthrow the Jammeh regime.

The extermination of the #WestAfrican migrants wld have bn successful but 1 of them, Martin Kyeere, from Ghana, managed to escape & would eventually inspire the movement to bring #Jammeh2Justice.

Nearly 3 yrs after the #massmurder of the migrants, @NigeriaGov & @ghanagov together with @ecowas_cedeao & @UN agreed with The Gambia to set up an inquiry onto the killings. It was a whitewash & close to a #Coverup.

The inquiry determined that the #WestAfrican migrants were in fact disappeared & killed in Gambia but inexplicably concluded that the govt of Gambia "was not directly or indirectly complicit" in the killings. It found no one responsible.

However, Jammeh agreed to locate the bodies of the victims & repatriate them back him for burial. He also agreed to pay $500k as compensation to the victims thro @ghanagov. The money was paid over but disappeared somewhere in Ghana.

In fact, only about 12 bodies were finally found & repatriated & it is suspected they were the wrong bodies.

Today, the victims of this act of sovereign #MassMurder by Yahya Jammeh are commemorated in a #Headstone in a cemetery in Ghana.

Contrary to the conclusion of the inquiry of 2008-9, testimonies from the Gambia Truth Commission now show that Yahya Jammeh in fact ordered the killing of the 56 #WestAfricans. This is why, today, we ask for support to bring #Jammeh2Justice.
