Russia welcomes Arctic cooperation with non-regional countries. a 🧵 on why suspending #Arctic dialogue & engagement w Moscow was a serious misstep.…
morality of engagement appeared to be the narrative which won out in this (likely) protracted war. in lieu of the transnational, frontier challenges which the #Arctic whips up - climate change, global transportation, data, space, minerals, hydrocarbons, fisheries.
rational interests were sacrificed: #Arctic Council was effectively suspended via a pause & Russia has wasted no time seeking out new avenues for engagement w states far beyond the region. some will be hard to exorcise once embedded.

China blocked a rescue plan for Emperor Penguin at the #ATCM44 & people are asking why?
1. China regards environment protection in Antarctica as a form of “soft presence”
2. China has a long-term agenda in Antarctica & seeks to access every available right there. 1/
3. The core agenda of China’s interests in Antarctica have always centered on access to available resources, an inherently anti-conservation, anti-preservation stance that contrasts with the position followed by many other states engaging in Antarctica today. 2/
I detailed China's stance on #Antarctic environmental protection in my 2017 book China as a Polar Great Power. It's based on 10 years of research in Chinese sources, some classified. CCP government policies on the polar regions have not changed since I published the book. 3/

Huge congratulations to @Endurance_22 and @NatGeo for finding the wreck of #Shackleton’s #Endurance. The wreck is amazing but can we also talk about some of the #Antarctic sea floor creatures that now call it home! Add any others you spot to the thread! (1) ImageImage
Huge #Antarctic sea anemones (Hormathia or similar) dangle their tentacles in the icy water! All of the animals that I have spotted so far are filter feeding! (2) ImageImageImageImage
Sea squirts pump water in and out through their two syphons to collect plankton and marine snow (dead things and poo raining down from the surface). (3) ImageImage

World’s Largest #Iceberg—Nearly Seven Times The Size of Mumbai—Forms in #Antarctica…

(📸:NASA/Chris Larsen)
A giant slab of ice almost seven times the size of Mumbai city has sheared off from the frozen edge of #Antarctica into the Weddell Sea, thereby becoming the largest #IceBerg in the world, according to the European Space Agency.
The #IceBerg dubbed A-76, measures around 4320 sq km in size—that is 170 km long and 25 km wide. In comparison, Mumbai’s total area is 603.4 sq km, while India’s capital city Delhi occupies about 1484 sq km.

Time to share our new paper published today in @EGU_TC " Diverging #future surface mass balance between the #Antarctic ice shelves and grounded ice sheet". 🥳 Message: The SMB is projected to increase over the grounded ice but to decrease on the peripheral ice shelves. (1/n)
We use our regional climate model #MAR to downscale 2 #CMIP5 and 2 #CMIP6 models that were carefully selected over the #Antarctic ice sheet . From 🌍 to🇦🇶using MAR as 🧐 (2/n)
The surface mass balance (ie, difference between accumulation and erosion at the ice sheet surface) is projected to increase ↗️ due to Global Warming. (3/n)

#October2020 Sees Earth Endure Third-Hottest October on Record, Arctic Witness Slowest Known Sea-Ice Growth…

(📸: Copernicus Climate Change Service/ECMWF)
Over the past few years, the climate across planet #Earth has been changing at a rapid pace, with its effects being fairly evident through hastened extinction of species, increased disaster events, brisk melting of ice, and record-breaking temperatures.

While the #COVID19Pandemic and the associated nationwide lockdowns did appear to have handed nature a much-needed ‘break’, the long-term build-up of warming agents in our atmosphere has continued to push mercury levels up across the globe.

Eight years ago today, we reopened camp at Roosevelt Island, #Antarctica. That season, a NZ-led 🇳🇿 team recovered a 764 meter long ice core to bedrock.

What are we looking at in this satellite image? 🛰🇦🇶
What you see at Roosevelt Island, #Antarctica 1) Large living tents and long, partly buried drill trench (with flags on top)
What you see at Roosevelt Island, #Antarctica 2) Personal mountain tents for sleeping. Bonus picture: what I look(ed) like after several months in the field... sunburnt, fuzzy, gross.

A "staggering" 28 trillion tonnes of ice has disappeared from the surface of the #Earth since 1994, a group of UK scientists has found.
Scientists from #Leeds and #Edinburgh universities and University College London analyzed satellite surveys of glaciers, mountains, and ice sheets between 1994 and 2017 to identify the impact of global warming.

Hi twitter! I have spent the last 5 weeks practicing #SocialDistancing and doing fun science in #Antarctica. It's been an INCREDIBLE trip. We were due to return home yesterday but bad weather means I get a few extra days in paradise. Time to share some of the adventure with you!
I am here as part of #RossRAMP's second seal team, equipping #WeddellSeals with CTD tags to see the how they utilize their environment throughout winter. We aimed to tag 21 post-moult post-partum females near NZ's Scott Base to see if they use the #RossSeaMarineProtectedArea
On the team we have Professors @RobHarcourt and Mark Hindell, wildlife vet @WellingtonZoo Baukje Lenting and UCSC PhD student @RachelHolser. This work is part of a 5-year @niwa_nz project that is looking at foraging behavior of Adelie and emperor penguins and Weddell seals.
