Anomalies in #Antarctic sea ice concentration show the monthly variation from the long-term mean. This map from shows more ➖ than ➕ anomalies for June. See the lack of sea ice in Bellingshausen Sea (arrowed), almost at summer ice levels in mid-winter! Image
This map from @NSIDC and @NASAEarth shows sea ice concentration on 17 June. The orange line is the typical extent for that day based on the average from 1981 to 2010. Some coastal regions are now ice-free where that has not been observed before. Image
The last decade has seen increased variability. Sea-ice area reached a record low in Feb 2023 following the previous record low in Feb 2022, and an extremely low summer avg in 2016/17. Is this shift in Antarctic sea ice a response to climate change? We need to find out @IPCC_CH. graph: Will Hobbs, AAPP

@CovertShores @Capt_Navy @The_Lookout_N @KaptainLOMA @CislakJaroslaw @BuchananLiz @WendtWeiss 2. R/V Ivan Frolov will replace the existing R/V Akademik Fedorov built in 1987 by the Finnish company Rauma-Repola.
"The new R/V is necessary for the smooth operation of Antarctic expeditions. Our country has 5 year-round stations & 5 seasonal bases on the continent."
@CovertShores @Capt_Navy @The_Lookout_N @KaptainLOMA @CislakJaroslaw @BuchananLiz @WendtWeiss 3. This may look like a very ordinary seascape, but it isn't. This view is at 72°S in the Bellingshausen Sea, #Antarctica, taken from RV Polarstern expedition #PS134. In a normal year there would be a lot of #seaice in this area, but this year there is none. 1/3
@AWI_Media @BAS_News This month has seen a new record minimum in #Antarctic #seaice extent since satellite records began more than 40 years ago. In the Bellingshausen Sea most of the ice was gone by the end of November. 2/3
@AWI_Media @BAS_News The minimum #seaice extent is highly variable from year to year, and we should be cautious about reading too much into a single year. However, #Antarctic annual and summer sea ice extents have now been below the long-term average for 7 years. A trend seems to be emerging. 3/3

Russia welcomes Arctic cooperation with non-regional countries. a 🧵 on why suspending #Arctic dialogue & engagement w Moscow was a serious misstep.…
morality of engagement appeared to be the narrative which won out in this (likely) protracted war. in lieu of the transnational, frontier challenges which the #Arctic whips up - climate change, global transportation, data, space, minerals, hydrocarbons, fisheries.
rational interests were sacrificed: #Arctic Council was effectively suspended via a pause & Russia has wasted no time seeking out new avenues for engagement w states far beyond the region. some will be hard to exorcise once embedded.

World’s Largest #Iceberg—Nearly Seven Times The Size of Mumbai—Forms in #Antarctica…

(📸:NASA/Chris Larsen)
A giant slab of ice almost seven times the size of Mumbai city has sheared off from the frozen edge of #Antarctica into the Weddell Sea, thereby becoming the largest #IceBerg in the world, according to the European Space Agency.
The #IceBerg dubbed A-76, measures around 4320 sq km in size—that is 170 km long and 25 km wide. In comparison, Mumbai’s total area is 603.4 sq km, while India’s capital city Delhi occupies about 1484 sq km.

(📸: Copernicus Climate Change Service/ECMWF)
Over the past few years, the climate across planet #Earth has been changing at a rapid pace, with its effects being fairly evident through hastened extinction of species, increased disaster events, brisk melting of ice, and record-breaking temperatures.

While the #COVID19Pandemic and the associated nationwide lockdowns did appear to have handed nature a much-needed ‘break’, the long-term build-up of warming agents in our atmosphere has continued to push mercury levels up across the globe.

Hi twitter! I have spent the last 5 weeks practicing #SocialDistancing and doing fun science in #Antarctica. It's been an INCREDIBLE trip. We were due to return home yesterday but bad weather means I get a few extra days in paradise. Time to share some of the adventure with you!
I am here as part of #RossRAMP's second seal team, equipping #WeddellSeals with CTD tags to see the how they utilize their environment throughout winter. We aimed to tag 21 post-moult post-partum females near NZ's Scott Base to see if they use the #RossSeaMarineProtectedArea
On the team we have Professors @RobHarcourt and Mark Hindell, wildlife vet @WellingtonZoo Baukje Lenting and UCSC PhD student @RachelHolser. This work is part of a 5-year @niwa_nz project that is looking at foraging behavior of Adelie and emperor penguins and Weddell seals.
