Interview with RAI is prelude to a Macron op-ed on future of EU post Brexit and the May euro elections which will be published tomorrow in newspapers across Europe. This was originally to have been speech, following up his big EU visionary speech at Sorbonne in September 2017.
Amongst other things Macron will call tomorrow for reform of EU competition, or antitrust, policy to allow the creation of new "airbuses" to compete globally with China or US in areas from rail manufacturing to artificial intelligence.
His argument is that EU must be seen as protecting European interests not pursuing an abstract obsession with openness and competition for its own sake. Attempt to seize high ground in euro elections. Also leadership of Europe?
He also told RAI he had made mistakes which led to the Gilets Jaunes movement and that the recent diplomatic spat with Italy was a misunderstanding. Hmmm.
Forgot to mention cheeky aspect of Macron op-ed which will be published tomorrow but released at 8pm tonight. He is expected to say EU should "take back control" of its economic destiny from China, USA etc. Where've we heard that phrase before?
