1) #ISIS puts into practice the hit and run tactics it has been detailing in its weekly paper al-Naba under a series called "Temporarily capturing cities". The group has been increasingly claiming briefly seizing small, remote areas in Libya, Iraq and Nigeria.
2) It's part of IS's war of attrition, highlighted by its leader al-Baghdadi on 29 Apr.
3) Repeated raids on isolated areas will weaken the enemy's defences, turn locals against security forces for failing to protect them, allow militants to seize weapons & supplies (& hostages to bargain with), & avoid direct confrontation with a superior force, says IS via Naba
4) The ultimate goal, of course, is to pave the way for IS to eventually regain control of territory or "tamkin" (regardless of what IS says about not caring about territory).
5) Our team has been closely following the tactics series IS has been publishing, and comparing the declared strategy with the group's alleged behaviour on the ground.
