After months of peaceful demonstration and due to the ongoing violence of Assad forces, Sarout and his friends carried weapon to defend his neighbourhood and to prevent the regime from suppressing the demos. They joined FSA groups.
He was injured multiple times during the fight, however he kept fighting for his cause and for what he believed. He stayed in Homs until the end of the fight and was forced later to leave toward the north.

In 2014 Sarout lost the last of his brothers Abdullah Sarout and Ahmad Sarout.
After he left Homs, he went to Turkey for a while. Later he came back to Syria to carry on the fight until he gave his live today defending Hama countryside.
Abdel Baest Sarout was one of few honest men who believed in freedom and gave their lives for it. He was the leader of his group and yet he didn't hide and let his companions fight.
Sarout's story summaries the Syrian Revolution, all of the patient, all of the suffer, all of its mistakes and contradictions. He was called also "the Keeper of dignity". He deserve to be called "the Syrian Che Guevara" because he was more alike Che than anyone.
