Ystrday I tweeted on coalition/contagion btwn #Saudi & Qatari feminists. No matter (Gulf) crisis, Saudi guardianship news was opportunity to renew calls for Qatari rights in new acct: @QatarFem. Today, closed due to #Qatar gov crackdown on women behind it.
Within a day, Qatari journalist @tahani_alhajri states that Qatari women behind account @QatarFem, & their families, were all summoned by #Qatar authorities for interrogation. They are fearful & closed account due to gov and it’s getting families involved.
It’s not clear what interrogation of #Qatar feminists will result in. However,Qatari feminist @MariamA1Hajri expressed concern & says (my rough translation): gov summoned the women via their families. One of women is adult who faces familial abuse at home.
#Qatar feminist AlHajri: “This means 2 problems occured: violation of free speech & privacy, as summoning families indirectly encourages their punishing the women at home. This also doesnt recognize women as accountable for selves...Why should we fear speaking in our own country?
My analysis: 1) Most concerning is #Qatar gov easily got women’s info via Twitter @QatarFem. 2) Like #Saudi, Qatar has pro-gov accts: Abdullah al-Mulla tweeted/RT’d on interrogation: arrests are 6mos-3yrs for public spreading obscenity, which he’s prev described feminists as.
3) There is irony needs to be seen in this case. Qatar media typically claimed supports arrested #Saudi feminists. Qatari female students even once held vigil for Saudi campaign, w no repercussion. Yet now, Qatar summoned own feminists for interrogation for opening acct @QatarFem
which group of Qatari women had used to renew calls for their own rights at home and highlight the ways some of Qatari laws may resemble #Saudi guardianship system, esp as relates to travel. This was clever, btw. And, 4) I am wondering about media coverage of this story, if any.
More on #3: Here’s mini-thread on contradictions/nuances of #Qatar media coverage on #Saudi feminism:
Fuller story of intersection between Saudi, Qatar, & feminist movement, is a long one that I’ll have to save for another time, but that offers more.
