So great to be back for dinner at Ciya Sofrasi in Istanbul. Traditional dishes from around Turkey, lovingly gathered on one menu.
This was beef in a sour cherry sauce. Superb
And they have quite a line in surprising desserts... this is candied tomato 🍅
And this is a slice of pumpkin, cooked in sugar syrup to be crunchy on the outside, soft inside - served with tahini and walnut sauce. This was so good, the favourite dessert in our group
The chef was featured in Netflix’s Chefs Table programme (great episode, highly recommend it), and this is his cookbook amazon.co.uk/dp/0714878154/…
But I’m pleased to report it hasn’t made it too difficult to get a table. If ever you’re in Istanbul, go

BBC Westminster unit bang on about ‘balance’ when get a far right figure with an extreme opinion on to oppose someone with evidenced facts - but then happily runs this opinion-led hit job without any balance from opposing views, or corrective editorial

There isn’t one single comment from an MP (of which there are many) who sees Bercow as having protected the constitutional sovereignty of parliament against an onslaught from an extremist government. There isn’t one quote from a constitutional expert...
There isn’t any balancing editorial about recent gov tricks to try to bypass Parliament, eg longest suspension poss at critical time, trying to make bills unamendable, which led to Bercow’s retaliation on behalf of parliament. No mention of times he ruled in favour of Brexiters

#IstanbulReelection- 39 Districts, 10,560,963 Votes. That’s a lot of votes to count! Down to 2 Mayoral candidates: Ruling Party #AKP candidate Yıldırım vs Main Opposition Party #CHP Candidate İmamoğlu. Polls will close at 5:00 pm here (in ~6 hours).
Over 1/3 of #Turkey’s population lives in #Istanbul. A good chunk of national GDP & many many billion dollars District budget for the elected #Mayor. #AKP lost in mayoral elections of biggest cities: #Ankara, #Izmir & #Antalya, with #Istanbul as the “hottest tamale” TBD today.

Just like #Gulen media #Zaman the majority of English-language medya outlets in #Turkey (#TRTWorld; #Yenisafak; etc) are currently under the Gov directive & control issuing one-sided pamphlets. Ignore them, and don’t pay attention when they are quoted by the Western media either
Btw: the Gov here recently sent several journalists from this paper to jail for exercising their right to free speech and engaging in journalism.

President Erdogan threatened in an op-ed in the @nytimes that #Turkey "has alternatives" to its alliance with the US. He's wrong, but we should be very alarmed. Here's a brief primer on the history of the US-Turkey alliance, warts and all, and what's at stake. 1/24
The US-Turkey alliance is rooted in the Truman Doctrine backed by significant US military and development assistance in the late 1940s-1950s designed to keep Turkey out of the Soviet sphere, and enshrined by Turkey joining NATO in 1952 alongside Greece. 2/24
Put crudely, Turkey joined up with the US and NATO because of the centuries-old threat posed by the Russian (then Soviet) military and the need to keep economic and military parity with rival Greece. It wasn't out of admiration or shared values. 3/24
