In Brisbane about to outline Labor’s vision for the economy – one that creates wealth as well as ensuring it’s distributed fairly.

Higher productivity, higher growth, higher wages – and fairer outcomes.

That’s Labor’s economic agenda.
This is the promise that drives Australians.

It’s the promise that drove my mum. It’s a promise I hope she saw realised in me. It’s the promise I hold for my son.

Labor is imbued with that same spirit.
Underneath the dead hand of a Government in its seventh year, the foundations of our strong economy – and all the opportunity it brings – are beginning to crack.

Australia can’t afford to rest on its laurels. Labor gets that, even if this Government doesn’t.
A failure to plan is a plan to fail. And this Government has no plans – for jobs, for growth, for higher wages.
At no time in our history has our position in the Indo-Asia Pacific been such an asset – one that we need to use to our advantage.
Better road and public transport cuts travel times, gets people home sooner and safer – and it creates jobs. Investing in infrastructure should always be a first order priority.
Prudence. Mutual obligation. These are the values I learned growing up with a single mum on a pension in council housing.
Australians are pragmatic, but they’re not timid. They will give governments licence to embark on programs of progress and change – provided you get the economy right first.
This is the social mobility – the aspiration – at the heart of Labor’s mission. Because now isn’t the time to lower our aspirations. Now is the time to raise them.
